# Anthony Bourdain > A chronological documentary of 241 moments spanning 1974–2026. > Source: https://loreline.live/loreline/anthony-bourdain · Loreline (loreline.live) He cooked for twenty-eight years before anyone pointed a camera at him, and he was nominated for the writing Emmy eight times and lost all eight before winning it twice, both times after he was gone. This archive is built out of what he looked at rather than what looked at him, because almost no free photograph of him exists and none of the television is free: the markets and hawker centres, the line and the walk-in, the bowl on a plastic stool, the bar at the end of the night, the aircraft window, and the books, which the Emmy record says were the real work all along. There is a 1995 interview, a 2013 Peabody speech, and a great deal of him talking, which is where his voice actually survives. He died on 8 June 2018. That is stated once, where it belongs in the sequence, and nothing before it is written as though it were coming. _Curated by Olivier · last updated 2026-09-20._ ## Eras - **Travel**, Aircraft cabins and airport gates, departure boards, trains and ferries and riverboats, motorbikes and taxis, and the road surface itself. He was documented as away about two hundred and fifty days a year, and this is that number made visible. It also holds the Alsace vineyard where the archive records his death. - **Writing**, Books, manuscripts, typewriters, notebooks, galleys and bookshop windows. The New Yorker essay in April 1999, Kitchen Confidential in August 2000, the novels, the graphic novels, the cookbooks, and the posthumous World Travel. The Emmy record says this was the real work: eight nominations for writing and eight losses, then two wins after his death. - **Markets**, Wet markets, night markets, hawker centres, souks, mercados, floating markets and fish auctions. The commerce of raw food, which is where he spent more screen time than anywhere else and which is the most completely free-licensed subject in the archive. Ben Thanh and Dong Xuan, the Tehran bazaar, Kinshasa, Singapore, La Boqueria, the stall and the cart. - **Kitchens**, The working station: ranges, salamanders, the pass, walk-ins, sauté stations, brigade whites and side towels. No free photograph exists of any kitchen he actually worked in, so this is built from other professional kitchens and the Culinary Institute of America, where he graduated in 1978. It is the twenty-eight years the television skipped over. - **Knives**, Blades, steels, whetstones, the knife roll and the cutting board. Butchery, breakdown, filleting and the cuts. Hands doing work. The craft he learned at the Culinary Institute and the one part of the job that stayed the same from the Lobster Pot in Provincetown to the end. - **Interviews**, Where he actually speaks. Studios, lecture halls, panels, bookshop appearances and award stages. This is the largest surviving body of him in his own voice, from a 1995 television interview through WNYC, Talks at Google and the 92nd Street Y to the 2013 Peabody acceptance. Since none of the television is free, this is where the man himself is audible. - **Filming**, The crew and their tools: camcorders and shoulder rigs, boom poles, field mixers, hard cases, monitors and edit suites. He described the operation as five very close friends with tiny little cameras. No frame of any episode is free-licensed, so this is documentary kit rather than his own footage, and it is captioned as such. - **Jiu-Jitsu**, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which he took up in his fifties and pursued seriously: gis, belts, mats, academies and competition floors. Blue belt in August 2015 and a competition gold in 2016. The smallest segment here, reported thin rather than padded, and it holds the single photograph tying him to it. - **Food**, The dish itself and the table it sits on. Bun cha in Hanoi, pho, banh mi, steak frites, offal and bone marrow and the nose-to-tail cooking he argued for, hawker plates, plastic stools, formica and oilcloth. The specific foods of the specific places, and the communal table he kept returning to as the point of the whole exercise. ## Timeline ### 1974 - **1974**, CIA Students 1974.
