Day 12 in our Aldabra Christmas Series.    Today’s animal is the Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) 🐢They are named for the greenish fat beneath their shell which is due to their seagrass diet, not their shell colour. Their carapace can range from olive to nearly black. 🌍 Green sea turtles are found in tropical and subtropical seas, often migrating thousands of kilometers between nesting and feeding grounds. 🏖️ Females come ashore at night to nest on the same beaches where they were born (a phenomenon called “natal homing.”) 🎂 Green sea turtles can live up to 90 years in the wild, but only about 1 in 1000 hatchlings survive to adulthood! 🌟 After decades of protection, the global population was reclassified from endangered to least concern in 2025!
