Marine turtles have benefited from decades of conservation efforts, with some populations showing encouraging signs of recovery, but these ancient mariners remain vulnerable and need continued protection. Continuing our efforts to save Aldabra, we’re sharing expert analysis on how the proposed Assomption Island luxury hotel development could impact these species and Aldabra’s UNESCO World Heritage marine ecosystem. The IUCN-SSC Marine Turtle Specialist Group, State of the World’s Sea Turtles and Oceanic Society flag: 🌟 “Decades of conservation efforts have resulted in positive recovery trends for these once over-exploited and diminished populations. Large-scale development—such as the proposed resort—threatens to reverse this progress.” 🌊 “Aldabra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, could also experience indirect ecological consequences, as disruptions to food webs involving sea turtle hatchlings could cascade throughout the ecosystem. The loss of these habitats and the ecological services they provide would undermine not only local biodiversity, but also the global value these ecosystems represent.“ 🌱 “While we recognize the economic opportunities tourism can bring, it is essential that development be balanced with the need to preserve natural ecosystems.”
