Meet the common mudskipper (Periophthalmus kalolo), also known as “Kabosoter” in Creole. Unlike most fish, the Kabosoter spends nearly 90% of its time OUT of water, using their strong pectoral fins to “walk” on land, making it a familiar sight in Seychelles’ mangroves. 🐟🌿 Its eyes are close-set and on top of its head, allowing it to see outside of the water. Kabosoters are also able to spend long periods of time on land as they can breathe through their skin! This mudskipper shows us that you can find the most fascinating, and sometimes unusual, creatures in every part of these ecosystems, all playing important roles.
