The UNESCO World Heritage Committee met in Busan, Republic of Korea this week. In the weeks prior, we wrote to them about adding Aldabra Atoll to their list of existing World Heritage sites to discuss. They refused, without providing an explanation.‼️ Aldabra Atoll, and the 400+ endemic species that inhabit it, have been at severe risk for 2 years. The threat? A 6*, Qatari-funded @rosewoodhotels that has caused local uproar, scientific outrage and global concern. We have been writing to UNESCO for 2 years, and have been met with silence. Why will they not speak out in support of Aldabra Atoll and Seychellois people? Could it be because the Chair of the World Heritage committee is Qatari? What do you think? We need to demand better from UNESCO. This is an international institution that is supposed to serve nature, not hotel investors’ financial interests.
