On 1st December, we joined President Herminie on an official visit to Assomption island. Here is our footage from the day, shared in chronological order so you can experience the journey as it unfolded, from our arrival to moments on the ground. ✈️🏝️ 1. Landing on Assomption 2. We visited the island by car with stops in key locations. Here, you can see building material scattered around - similar to footage previously shown in the media. 3. Passing buildings under construction. Notice the wall separating the residential villas from the rest of the development and the lack of temporary barriers to keep wildlife off the road and out of harm’s way. 4. The site of the entertainment centre. 5. Briefing the President and the rest of the group in Villa 34, one of the villas closest to completion. 6. Piles of sand and gravel when entering the Back of House area. The sand was confirmed to have been taken from the Assomption sand dunes. 7, 8 & 9. The staff quarters, which are at an advanced stage of construction. We asked Koos Jordan, the project manager on the island about waste management plans for the staff accommodation. 10. The remarkable karst caves of Assomption, harbouring life about which very little is currently known. Some of the much smaller karst holes present throughout the island have been filled by concrete to flatten the terrain. 11. Video from Aldabra as an example of the karst holes that have been filled elsewhere on Assomption. The damage this will cause the fragile ecosystem can not be truly measured as we have no existing records. 12. The sand dunes. It was confirmed that sand has been removed from this area to extend the runway, provide sand for construction (as seen in the back of house video) and provide sand for the Fifa Beach Soccer World Cup Stadium. The sand dunes were outlined as an area of high sensitivity in the Environmental Impact Assessment, and should not have been altered. 13.
