Dr. Herminie’s announcement to “halt” the Assomption development marks a turning point, but raises urgent questions. We are not under any illusion: the fight is far from over. His statements, interviews, and social contract raise many questions. While the President-elect has pledged to investigate what happened on Assomption, he has yet to clarify when this will begin, who will lead it, and whether independent scientists and conservationists will be allowed access to the island. He has also introduced new language: referring to “biosecurity”, “sensitive” and “non-sensitive” zones on Assomption. Statements on the value of the lease, a coast guard base, possible usage by international navies, and possible ties with India (and Europe) is fuelling concern about what may come next. Could economic or geopolitical interests once again override ecological integrity? Friends of Aldabra has reached out to the incoming administration requesting a meeting, but has not yet received a response. We will continue to seek answers, push for transparency.
