@UNESCO World Heritage Sites are recognized as the best the world has to offer. Places like the Galápagos Islands and the Great Barrier Reef are chosen for their outstanding biodiversity and conservation value. It makes sense to protect them. So why is UNESCO seemingly unbothered by a luxury resort development threatening one of their sites, Aldabra Atoll? UNESCO itself calls Aldabra one of the most important habitats on Earth for studying evolution and ecology, prized for its remoteness and its history of staying untouched by humans. A resort now under construction on Assomption Island, just 27 km away, is threatening all of that. The Committee just wrapped its 48th session in Busan, adding six sites to the List of World Heritage in Danger. Aldabra wasn’t mentioned. We cosigned a letter with @FriendsOfAldabra urging UNESCO to investigate, but nothing came of it. Why? Pristine ecosystems like this are increasingly rare.
