You’re packed. You’re ready. But are you biosecurity approved? 🌿🐢✈️ In Episode 2, @sey_saltylocs takes us on the journey from Mahé to Aldabra, and explains why getting there is a multi-step process. 🛑 Biosecurity is the shield that protects Aldabra’s extraordinary ecosystem. Invasive species, be it a single papaya seed, a stray ant or a pathogen on a piece of clothing, could trigger a chain reaction that permanently damages one of the world’s last truly wild places. Invasive species don’t need much. They hide in the folds of your clothes, in your medication bag...in the intimate corners of your bag that you’d rather no one looked at. 😅🐜🌱🦠 This is why every person going to Assomption and/or Aldabra is thoroughly checked, through multiple inspections that require a large amount of time. For the team of ~20 on Aldabra, their single six-month food shipment to Aldabra takes a dedicated team of at least 8 people dedicating 3 days of work to inspect every single item. It has taken over 50 years of careful effort to protect Aldabra’s fragile ecosystem. While no system is perfect, these biosecurity measures exist for a reason - and together with Aldabra’s remoteness, they have helped protect this ecosystem. How could these standards be upheld for a luxury hotel in operation? Can we realistically inspect every food item, supply crate, linen bundle, strawberry, staff member and especially high-paying guests at this scale and remoteness?
