The Genji Monogatari Emaki: the oldest surviving Genji scroll

Smarthistory art historians examine the c.1130 illustrated Tale of Genji handscroll held at the Tokugawa Art Museum in Nagoya, ink and colour on paper. It is the earliest surviving pictorial version of the novel, made roughly a century after the text was written.
