Eras

  1. Oldowan Stone Tools. Earliest known stone tool industry — sharp-edged flakes struck off cobbles. Found across East Africa at sites like Gona, Ethiopia. Predates Homo sapiens by 2.4 million years.
  2. Controlled Use of Fire. Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa shows the earliest definitive evidence of habitual fire use. Once humans control fire, cooking unlocks new food sources and human brain size accelerates.
  3. The Spear. Wooden spears found at Schöningen, Germany — eight throwing spears used to hunt horses, made by Homo heidelbergensis. The oldest known hunting weapons.
  4. The Sewing Needle. Bone needles found at Denisova Cave (Siberia) and Sungir (Russia) push the invention back at least 50,000 years. Sewn clothing makes life north of the 40th parallel possible.
  5. Cave Painting. Earliest known representational art — hand stencils and animal figures at El Castillo (Spain), Chauvet (France), Sulawesi (Indonesia). Three independent invention sites within 5,000 years of each other.
  6. Pottery. Xianrendong Cave, southern China — fired-clay vessels for boiling food, 20,000 years old. The first synthetic material humans manufactured.
  7. Agriculture. Cultivation of wheat and barley begins in the Levant — the Natufian and pre-pottery Neolithic populations stop foraging and start farming. The single largest behavioral shift in human history.
  8. The Plough. The ard — a wooden scratch-plough drawn by oxen — appears in Mesopotamia around 4500 BC. Surplus grain becomes possible; cities follow.
  9. The Sailboat. Earliest depicted sailing vessel — Egyptian reed-bundle boats on a painted vase from Naqada. Sail-powered ships allow trade across the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean.
  10. The Wheel. Earliest wheels found in Mesopotamia and the Caucasus — initially potter's wheels, then ox-cart wheels by 3200 BC. Surprisingly late given its mechanical simplicity.
  11. Bronze. Tin-copper alloy harder and more durable than either parent metal. Independently invented in Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, and China within a 500-year window.
  12. Writing (Cuneiform). The first writing system — proto-cuneiform pictographs at Uruk, Mesopotamia. Initially used for grain accounting; the script becomes phonetic over the next 500 years.
  13. Glass. Manufactured glass beads from Mesopotamia and Egypt — beads first, then vessels by 1500 BC, then transparent glass by 100 BC.
  14. Iron Smelting. Hittite Empire develops bloomery iron smelting in Anatolia. Iron weapons + tools spread across Eurasia over the next 500 years, ending the Bronze Age.
  15. Coinage. King Alyattes of Lydia (in modern Turkey) issues the first standardised coinage — electrum stamped with a lion's head. Within a century, every Mediterranean state mints its own.
  16. Lighthouse of Alexandria. Pharos of Alexandria — first known lighthouse, 100 m tall, visible at 50 km. One of the Seven Wonders. Survives until 1303 AD when an earthquake destroys it.
  17. Archimedes' Screw. Helical pump for raising water — Archimedes designs it during his time in Egypt. Still used 2,250 years later for industrial fluid handling.
  18. Earth's Circumference Measured. Eratosthenes of Alexandria measures the angle of the sun at noon in Syene vs Alexandria, calculates Earth's circumference within 2% of the modern value. 1,800 years before Magellan circumnavigates.
  19. Antikythera Mechanism. A bronze geared analog computer for predicting astronomical positions. Found in a Mediterranean shipwreck in 1901; the level of gearing isn't matched anywhere until 1300s European clocks.
  20. Hero's Aeolipile (First Steam Engine). Hero of Alexandria builds a steam-driven sphere that rotates from jets of escaping steam. Considered a curiosity at the time; no industrial use for 1,700 years.
  21. Paper. Cai Lun standardises a process for making paper at the Han Dynasty court — mulberry bark, hemp, rags pulped and pressed into sheets. The substrate the printing press will need.
  22. Gunpowder. Tang Dynasty Chinese alchemists looking for an elixir of life discover the saltpeter-charcoal-sulfur formula. Weaponised within 200 years, reaches Europe by 1300.
  23. Mechanical Clock. The verge-and-foliot escapement, possibly first installed in Dunstable Priory, England. Clock towers spread across European cities; the 24-hour day becomes a measurable, divisible unit.
  24. Printing Press. Johannes Gutenberg in Mainz prints the 42-line Bible using movable type cast from a lead-tin-antimony alloy. Within 50 years there are 28,000 different books in print across Europe.
  25. Telescope. Hans Lippershey of the Netherlands files a patent in October 1608. Galileo builds his own version within a year and points it at the moon.
  26. Microscope. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek's single-lens microscopes magnify up to 270×. He discovers protozoa, bacteria, sperm cells — a hidden universe.
  27. Universal Gravitation. Isaac Newton publishes the Principia Mathematica — explains planetary motion, tides, and falling apples with one set of equations. Mathematical physics begins.
  28. Newcomen's Atmospheric Engine. Thomas Newcomen builds the first commercially-successful steam engine — pumps water out of Cornish tin mines. James Watt's improved version arrives 60 years later.
  29. Hot-Air Balloon. The Montgolfier brothers fly their first passenger-carrying balloon over Versailles — a sheep, a duck, and a rooster aboard. Two months later humans fly. Aviation begins.
  30. Vaccination. Edward Jenner inoculates an 8-year-old with cowpox to protect against smallpox. Smallpox is the first disease eradicated by vaccination (1980); polio and measles are next.
  31. Battery (Voltaic Pile). Alessandro Volta stacks zinc and copper discs separated by saltwater-soaked card. The first reliable source of sustained electric current. The unit "volt" is named for him.
  32. Steam Locomotive. Richard Trevithick's "Penydarren" hauls 10 tons of iron and 70 men along nine miles of Welsh track. Steam railways spread across Britain in the 1820s, the world by 1860.
  33. Electric Motor. Michael Faraday demonstrates electromagnetic rotation — a wire carrying current rotates around a magnet. The principle behind every electric motor since.
  34. Photograph. Joseph Nicéphore Niépce takes "View from the Window at Le Gras" — an 8-hour bitumen-coated pewter exposure of his courtyard in Burgundy. The oldest surviving photograph.
  35. Electric Telegraph. Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail patent a single-wire telegraph using on/off current pulses. In 1844 Morse sends "What hath God wrought" from Washington to Baltimore. Communication detaches from physical transport.
  36. Surgical Anesthesia. William T. G. Morton publicly demonstrates ether anesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital. Major surgery becomes survivable; the operation rate goes 10×.
  37. Transatlantic Telegraph Cable. Cyrus West Field lays the first cable between Valentia, Ireland and Heart's Content, Newfoundland. Queen Victoria messages President Buchanan on Aug 16. The cable fails in weeks; a working one is laid in 1866.
  38. Periodic Table. Dmitri Mendeleev publishes the periodic table of elements, leaving gaps for elements not yet discovered and predicting their properties. Gallium, scandium, germanium are all later found with the exact properties predicted.
  39. Telephone. Alexander Graham Bell transmits "Mr. Watson — come here — I want to see you" three days after his patent grants. By 1881 every major American city has telephone exchanges.
  40. Sound Recording (Phonograph). Thomas Edison records and plays back "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on a tinfoil cylinder. The first device that captures sound and replays it.
  41. Incandescent Light Bulb. Thomas Edison's carbon-filament bulb runs for 13.5 hours in his Menlo Park lab. The Pearl Street Station (1882) becomes the first commercial power plant. Cities stop sleeping.
  42. Radio Waves Generated. Heinrich Hertz generates and detects electromagnetic waves — confirming Maxwell's 1865 equations experimentally. Asked the use, Hertz replies "of no use whatsoever."
  43. Cinema (Lumière Brothers). On December 28, 1895, Auguste and Louis Lumière hold the first commercial film screening at the Salon Indien du Grand Café, Paris. 33 paying spectators, ten short films.
  44. X-Ray. Wilhelm Röntgen accidentally discovers x-rays at the University of Würzburg — photographs his wife's hand showing her wedding ring on the skeleton. Medical diagnostics transformed within a decade.
  45. Wireless Telegraphy. Guglielmo Marconi patents the first practical wireless telegraph. By 1901 he transmits "S" across the Atlantic. Radio communication becomes a global industry.
  46. Radioactivity. Marie and Pierre Curie isolate polonium and radium from pitchblende, name the phenomenon "radioactivity". Marie wins two Nobel Prizes in different sciences.
  47. Powered Flight (Wright Brothers). On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright flies 120 feet over Kitty Hawk, North Carolina — 12 seconds at 6.8 mph. Within six years, planes are crossing the English Channel.
  48. Special Relativity. Albert Einstein's annus mirabilis — four papers including E=mc² and the photoelectric effect. He is 26, working in the Bern patent office.
  49. First Radio Broadcast. Christmas Eve 1906: Reginald Fessenden broadcasts music and a Bible reading from Brant Rock, Massachusetts. Ships at sea hear human voices on their wireless receivers.
  50. Model T (Mass-Production Automobile). Henry Ford's Model T begins production in Detroit. 1913 sees the introduction of the moving assembly line — Model T cost drops from $850 to $260 by 1925.
  51. General Relativity. Einstein presents the field equations of gravity. The 1919 solar eclipse expedition confirms his prediction of light bending — overnight he becomes the most famous scientist in the world.
  52. Insulin. Frederick Banting and Charles Best isolate insulin in Toronto. Within a year, diabetic patients who were dying within months of diagnosis are surviving for decades.
  53. Television. John Logie Baird transmits the first recognisable human image — a 30-line mechanical scan from his Soho laboratory. Electronic TV catches up by 1936; mechanical TV is dead by 1940.
  54. Penicillin. Alexander Fleming notices that Penicillium mold has killed bacterial colonies in a contaminated petri dish. Mass production by 1944 transforms wartime medicine; antibiotic era begins.
  55. Jet Engine. Frank Whittle's Power Jets W.1 runs in Rugby; Hans von Ohain's parallel German design powers the Heinkel He 178 in 1939. Jet airliners are routine within 15 years.
  56. First Nuclear Reactor (Chicago Pile-1). December 2, 1942: Enrico Fermi achieves the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction under the stands of an unused football field at the University of Chicago.
  57. ENIAC (First Programmable Electronic Computer). University of Pennsylvania, completed November 1945. 17,468 vacuum tubes, 30 tons, 1,800 sq ft of floor space. Calculated artillery firing tables for the US Army.
  58. Atomic Bomb (Trinity Test). July 16, 1945: the first nuclear-weapon test, 200 miles south of Albuquerque. Oppenheimer reportedly thinks of the Bhagavad Gita. Three weeks later, Hiroshima.
  59. Transistor. Bell Labs (Bardeen, Brattain, Shockley) demonstrate the first point-contact transistor on December 23, 1947. Vacuum tubes' century-long reign is over; the silicon era begins.
  60. Long-Playing Record (LP). Columbia Records introduces the 12-inch 33⅓ rpm vinyl LP, holding 22 minutes per side. The 78 rpm shellac record (3-4 min/side) is dead within a decade.
  61. First Artificial Satellite (Sputnik 1). October 4, 1957: USSR launches a 58-cm aluminium sphere with two radio transmitters. The Space Age begins; NASA is founded in response 10 months later.
  62. Integrated Circuit. Jack Kilby at Texas Instruments demonstrates the first IC — five components on a single germanium wafer. Robert Noyce at Fairchild does the same with silicon a year later.
  63. Laser. Theodore Maiman builds the first working laser at Hughes Research Labs — a ruby rod pumped by a flashlamp. CD players, fiber-optic communication, surgery, holograms all follow.
  64. Human Spaceflight (Yuri Gagarin). April 12, 1961: Yuri Gagarin orbits Earth once in Vostok 1, 108 minutes. The Soviet Union beats the US to crewed orbital flight by 23 days.
  65. Moon Landing. July 20, 1969: Apollo 11 lands the Eagle on the Sea of Tranquility. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spend 21.5 hours on the lunar surface. 650 million people watch live.
  66. ARPANET. October 29, 1969: the first ARPANET message — "LO" — sent between UCLA and Stanford (the system crashed before "LOGIN" finished). The internet's direct ancestor.
  67. Email. Ray Tomlinson at BBN sends the first networked email between two ARPANET-connected hosts. He picks the @ symbol because it wasn't in any usernames at the time.
  68. Microprocessor (Intel 4004). November 1971: Intel ships the 4004, a 4-bit CPU on a single chip. 2,300 transistors. The microcomputer revolution it enables sells billions of devices over the next 50 years.
  69. Mobile Phone. April 3, 1973: Motorola engineer Martin Cooper makes the first cellular phone call from a Manhattan sidewalk — to his rival at Bell Labs. The DynaTAC handset weighed 2.2 lb.
  70. MRI. Raymond Damadian builds the first whole-body MRI scanner, "Indomitable". The first patient scan takes nearly five hours. Today's machines image in minutes; the technology wins the 2003 Nobel.
  71. GPS (Navstar-1 Launch). February 22, 1978: the first GPS satellite. Full 24-satellite constellation by 1994. Made available to civilians (with deliberate accuracy degradation) in 1983; full precision since 2000.
  72. Compact Disc. October 1, 1982: Sony and Philips ship the first CDs commercially — Japan first, then Europe and North America. The first CD album sold is Billy Joel's 52nd Street.
  73. Portable Personal Stereo (Walkman). July 1, 1979: Sony introduces the TPS-L2 Walkman in Tokyo. 30,000 units sell in two months. Public space gets a soundtrack.
  74. World Wide Web. March 1989: Tim Berners-Lee submits "Information Management: A Proposal" at CERN. The first web server goes live December 20, 1990. The web becomes public in August 1991.
  75. Human Genome Project Completed. April 14, 2003: the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium publishes the essentially-complete reference genome. 92% of the genome at <1 error per 10,000 bases.
  76. iPhone. January 9, 2007: Steve Jobs introduces the iPhone at Macworld. "Today Apple is going to reinvent the phone." The App Store opens 18 months later.
  77. CRISPR Gene Editing. Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier publish the CRISPR-Cas9 paper. Programmable DNA editing for any organism. Nobel Prize 2020.
  78. Reusable Orbital Rocket (Falcon 9 Landing). December 21, 2015: SpaceX's Falcon 9 first stage lands back at Cape Canaveral after delivering its payload to orbit. Per-launch cost drops by an order of magnitude.
  79. AlphaGo Beats Lee Sedol. March 2016: DeepMind's AlphaGo beats 18-time world Go champion Lee Sedol 4-1 in Seoul. The game thought to be a decade away from AI mastery falls in three days.
  80. mRNA Vaccine (BNT162b2). December 2020: Pfizer-BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine becomes the first mRNA vaccine authorised for human use. Three weeks from outbreak to first dose was 11 months — the fastest vaccine development ever.
  81. James Webb Space Telescope. December 25, 2021: JWST launches from French Guiana. The most powerful infrared space telescope. First-light images December 2021 show galaxies 13.5 billion light-years away.
  82. Stable Diffusion (Open-Source Image Gen). August 2022: Stability AI releases Stable Diffusion under the CreativeML license — runs on consumer GPUs. The first generative-image model anyone can run locally.
  83. ChatGPT. November 30, 2022: OpenAI launches ChatGPT. 100 million users in 60 days — the fastest consumer-product growth in history. Large language models become a household concept.
  84. Sora — Text-to-Video. February 2024: OpenAI demos Sora, generating minute-long photoreal video from text prompts. Veo (Google, May 2024) and Runway Gen-3 (June 2024) follow within four months.
