The Roland TB-303 Bass Line, sold from 1981 to 1984 as a computerised bass machine for guitarists with no bass player. It failed at that: the sound was judged unrealistic and Roland discontinued it. That failure is why it turned up cheap secondhand in Chicago, and cheap secondhand is how acid house got made.
