A demonstration of the Roland TR-808 across its full voice set. Launched in 1980 at $1,195 and killed off in 1983 after roughly 12,000 units, it was discontinued because Roland could no longer source the faulty transistors that gave it its sizzle, and by 1983 used units were going for under $100.
