Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage, 1987
1987
Nearly five hours of Levan at 84 King Street in the club's final year, the closest thing that exists to sitting in that room. The Garage was members-only and served no liquor, which is exactly why it had no closing time and why the DJ set could become an art form. Levan's audience was overwhelmingly Black, Latino and gay, in a room that existed because they were not welcome elsewhere.
