Lama Ole Nydahl

The life and work of Lama Ole Nydahl (1941–2026) — the Danish ex-boxer and adventurer who, with his wife Hannah, became the first Western students of the 16th Karmapa in the Himalayas and was sent home to bring Diamond Way Buddhism to the West. Told through his own photographs and teachings: from Copenhagen to Kathmandu, the first centers behind the Iron Curtain, fifty years on the road, more than 600 centers worldwide, and a two-week farewell at the Europe Center in 2026.

1. 1941 — A Danish boy born into the war. Lama Ole Nydahl was born on 19 March 1941 north of Copenhagen and grew up there. His parents took part in the Danish resistance, helping to ferry Jews across the water to safety in neutral Sweden. (Photo: Ole as a boy.)
2. 1961 — Philosophy in Copenhagen, the USA, Tübingen and Munich. He studied Philosophy, English and German at the University of Copenhagen, and in the U.S.A., Tübingen and Munich — a restless, brilliant student. After a spell in the Danish army he travelled the overland road east again and again, drawn to the Himalayas, wild and adventurous in his youth.
3. 1968 — Hannah and Ole. In 1968 Ole married Hannah, and the couple set off on a honeymoon overland to Kathmandu, Nepal. Hannah Nydahl would become his lifelong partner in the work and one of the lineage’s most sought-after translators. (Photo from his site: Hannah and Ole Nydahl.)

5. 1969 — The young 16th Karmapa. Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, head of the Karma Kagyu lineage — whose first Western students Ole and Hannah became in 1969.
6. 1969 — The first Western students of the 16th Karmapa. In 1969 they met and became the first Western students of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje — the highest Lama of the eleven-century-old Karma Kagyu school, which teaches Diamond Way Buddhism. 7. 1970 — With Lopön Tsechu in the Himalayas. Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche with Hannah and Lama Ole Nydahl — their first teacher, met in Kathmandu, and a lifelong friend of the Nydahls.
8. 1970 — Ngöndro with Kalu Rinpoche. Studying in the Himalayas, the Nydahls received the Four Foundational Practices (Ngöndro) from Kalu Rinpoche in 1970–71, and the Bodhisattva Promise from Shamar Rinpoche in 1970, completing the preliminary practices in just six months.
9. 1972 — Hannah Nydahl, translator of the lineage. Hannah Nydahl — Ole and Hannah were partners in the work, and she became one of the Karma Kagyu lineage’s most trusted translators, working closely with its highest lamas for nearly forty years.
10. 1974 — The 16th Karmapa in Copenhagen. The 16th Karmapa with Hannah and Lama Ole Nydahl during his historic tours of the West in the 1970s, hosted at the centers the Nydahls had begun to build.
11. 1975 — Teaching in communist Poland. Under difficult circumstances, Lama Ole began in 1975 to teach and build centers in communist Poland — the start of the deep friendships and connections to the Eastern Bloc that would define so much of his life’s work.
12. 1976 — The Karmapa in the Gampopa hat. The 16th Karmapa wearing the Gampopa hat of the lineage — the teacher and driving force behind Diamond Way Buddhism coming to the West.
13. 1977 — The Vajra Crown. The 16th Karmapa holding the Vajra Crown during the Black Crown ceremony, a defining image of the Karma Kagyu lineage in the 1970s.
14. 1977 — The Black Crown Ceremony. The 16th Karmapa performs the Black Crown ceremony — the rare ritual, said to liberate on sight, at the heart of his tours through the Western centers.
15. 1977 — The 16th Karmapa & the Black Crown. The 16th Gyalwa Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje performing the Black Crown ceremony — the rare ritual in which the Karmapa places the Vajra Crown upon his head, said to liberate on sight. It was at the heart of the historic tours of the West that Lama Ole helped organise.
16. 1979 — Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche. born in Bhutan in 1918, a master who built seventeen stupas across the West and remained close to the Nydahls until his death in 2003.
17. 1981 — With Shamar Rinpoche at Rumtek. Shamar Rinpoche with Hannah and Lama Ole Nydahl at Rumtek — the seat of the Karmapa in exile, and the centre of the lineage after 1959.
18. 1981 — The 16th Karmapa passes away. In 1981 the 16th Karmapa passed away in Chicago, his composure in dying deeply moving the doctors who attended him. 21. 1987 — The first Phowa courses. In 1987 Shamar Rinpoche — the second-highest Lama of the Karma Kagyu after the Karmapa — asked Lama Ole to give Phowa courses, the practice of conscious dying, to Western students. 22. 1989 — The first center in the Soviet Union. In 1989, with the Kagyu Ngagdzö from Kontrul Rinpoche, Lama Ole founded the first Diamond Way Buddhist Center in what was then the Soviet Union. Diamond Way Buddhism was later officially recognised as a religion in Russia, and Lama Ole travelled the Trans-Siberian railway to Vladivostok with up to 200 students every year.

24. 1992 — The work with the 17th Karmapa begins. From 1992 Lama Ole concentrated on the work given to him by his teachers, together with the 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje — who was appointed by the Shamarpa — and with Lopön Tsechu, Jigme Rinpoche, Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche, Gendün Rinpoche, Beru Khyentse and many others.
25. 1992 — Book: "Riding the Tiger". A twenty-year account of establishing Tibetan Buddhist centers in the West — its challenges and spiritual developments. Published 1992.
26. 1994 — Shamar Rinpoche introduces the 17th Karmapa. In 1994 Shamar Rinpoche introduced the 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje in New Delhi. Recognised by the Shamarpa as the official reincarnation, the young Karmapa had left Chinese-occupied Tibet at the age of eleven to complete his training in India. 30. 1999 — The Diamantweg foundation. In 1999 Lama Ole and Hannah Nydahl, Caty Hartung and the Buddhistischer Dachverband Diamantweg e.V. founded the charitable foundation "Buddhismus Stiftung Diamantweg". 31. 1999 — Book: "Entering the Diamond Way". An introduction to Tibetan Buddhism through Lama Ole and Hannah’s own spiritual journey in the Himalayas.
32. 2000 — 6,000 welcome the 17th Karmapa in Düsseldorf. In 2000 Lama Ole invited the 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje to Europe. 34. 2001 — Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche in Graz. Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche — the Nydahls' first teacher and the builder of seventeen stupas in the West — in Graz, Austria, where one of the first Diamond Way centers and stupas were raised.

39. 2003 — Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche passes away. On 10 June 2003 Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche passed away at the age of 85, having built 17 stupas in the West. That same summer, on his 88th parachute jump, Lama Ole met with a life-threatening accident and had to cancel his lecture tour.
40. 2003 — Return to teaching at the Benalmádena Stupa. In October 2003, during an initiation at the largest stupa ever built in the Western world — the 33-metre Stupa of Enlightenment in Benalmádena, Spain, built by Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche — Lama Ole resumed his duties as a Buddhist teacher. 186. 2017 — Thaye Dorje, the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa. Born in 1983 and recognised by Shamar Rinpoche, Thaye Dorje left Chinese-occupied Tibet in 1994 and completed his training in India. For the Diamond Way he is the present holder of the lineage — the teacher to whom Lama Ole presented the more than 600 centers, and who presided over his farewell.

On 5 August 2023 the Enlightenment Stupa, built on Lama Ole’s wish under Venerable Nedo Kuchung Rinpoche on the grounds of the Europe Center, was inaugurated — the consecration presided over by H.H. the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa during the Summer Course, marking the completion of the building phase begun in 2007. 244. 2026-05-18 — The passing of Lama Ole Nydahl. On 18 May 2026 Lama Ole Nydahl died peacefully at the age of 85 in Immenstadt im Allgäu. After fifty-four years of teaching he left behind a worldwide lineage of more than 600 centers and a Buddhism made at home in the West.

On 21 May 2026, following the completion of Lama Ole’s Thugdam, the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Thaye Dorje opened the farewell ceremonies at the Europe Center, in the presence of eminent Rinpoches and Lamas of the Karma Kagyu lineage and several thousand students.
