MoDem Festival

MO:DEM, a psytrance festival held in a Croatian forest. The festival records itself unusually well, complete sets from The Hive going back years, official aftermovies, films about the visual artists, and a lecture programme on everything from functional fungi to sacred architecture. Built almost entirely from that public record, plus the phone footage of the people who were standing in the trees at four in the morning.

Eras

Crowd, Dancefloors, campsites, costume, cooking, queueing and the long unglamorous middle of a multi-day festival. Mostly filmed by attendees on their own phones, which makes it the least curated and often the most honest record of what the place is actually like.
Aftermovies, How each edition chose to remember itself. Aftermovies are not documentary, they are the festival editing its own myth, shot on drones and long lenses and cut to the year's best track. Read as artifacts of what the organisers wanted the year to have felt like.
Other Stages, The Swamp, the chill-out spaces, the ambient rooms and everywhere else the sound goes. A forest festival is never one dancefloor, it is a set of rooms with different weather, and people move between them for days.
Musicians, The people making the sound: interviews, studio and label features, collectives talking about their work. Psytrance is a producer's genre built in bedrooms and small labels, and the festival circuit is where that work meets an audience.
Site, The woodland, the water, the light through the canopy and the mud when it rains. The site is the argument: this music was built for open air and darkness under trees, and a festival that puts a stage in a forest is making a claim about where it belongs.
