Psytrance
Psychedelic trance began as a DJ practice on a beach. Through the 1970s and 80s the freaks who wintered in Anjuna and Vagator swapped guitars for tape decks, and by the early 1990s the edits they played at the full-moon parties had become a genre of its own, Goa trance, with its own labels in London and Tel Aviv and its own canon of records. Then it split, over and over: the Israeli full-on that filled arenas, the darkpsy and forest strains that went the other way into the night, the patient progressive sound, the psychill of the chillout dome, and a global festival circuit from Boom in Portugal to Ozora in Hungary to Universo Paralello on a Brazilian beach. This is that whole evolution, the records, the parties, the archival footage and the people.

- Goa, Where it started. The Anjuna and Vagator beaches, the freak scene that wintered there from the late 1960s, Goa Gil and the full-moon parties, and the place as it is now.
