Psytrance
Psychedelic trance began as a DJ practice on a beach. Through the 1970s and 80s the freaks who wintered in Anjuna and Vagator swapped guitars for tape decks, and by the early 1990s the edits they played at the full-moon parties had become a genre of its own — Goa trance, with its own labels in London and Tel Aviv and its own canon of records. Then it split, over and over: the Israeli full-on that filled arenas, the darkpsy and forest strains that went the other way into the night, the patient progressive sound, the psychill of the chillout dome, and a global festival circuit from Boom in Portugal to Ozora in Hungary to Universo Paralello on a Brazilian beach. This is that whole evolution — the records, the parties, the archival footage and the people.

- Goa — Where it started. The Anjuna and Vagator beaches, the freak scene that wintered there from the late 1960s, Goa Gil and the full-moon parties — and the place as it is now.
- Goa Trance — The records that made the sound between 1993 and 2000, and the labels that carried them out of India — Dragonfly, TIP, Blue Room Released, Matsuri, Flying Rhino.
- Full-On — The Israeli turn at the end of the nineties: faster, cleaner, built for enormous rooms. Hommega and Phonokol, Infected Mushroom and Astrix, and the road to the main stage.
- Dark & Forest — The strains that went the other way — darkpsy, forest, hi-tech and Finnish suomisaundi. Parvati Records and the floors that only make sense at four in the morning.
- Progressive — The slower, deeper, more patient branch. Iboga and Zenon, and the long-build sets that own the sunrise.
- Psychill — The chillout dome. Shpongle, Ott and the psybient producers who made the music you hear when you finally sit down.
- The Festivals — Where the culture lives now — Boom in Portugal, Ozora in Hungary, Universo Paralello in Brazil, Mo:Dem, Psy-Fi, Origin and the rest of the global circuit.
