Tier-1 artifact for any archive of 2000s music video culture. Context: Released in early 2004, 'Walkie Talkie Man' arrived at the intersection of peak MTV video culture and the nascent iPod boom. Apple's selection of the track for a major iPod advertisement massively amplified its reach beyond music video channels, making it one of the first viral music-advertisement crossovers of the broadband era. The video's hand-knitted surrealism was simultaneously countercultural, rejecting the CGI-heavy digital aesthetics dominant at the time, and commercially potent. Gondry was at the apex of his dual career, releasing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind the same year. The video's craft-based visual language anticipated the late-2000s DIY/Etsy aesthetic movement and stands as a key document of New Zealand alternative rock achieving international mainstream penetration. Director notes: Directed in a New York studio, with separate adjacent rooms for live-action performance and stop-motion animation. Stop-motion sequences executed by Peter Sluszka of Dancing Diablo Studio, who served as director of animation and cited Ray Harryhausen as an influence. Production designer Laurie Faggione constructed the entire yarn-based visual universe. Animator/DP Adrian Scartascini and Partizan Entertainment also collaborated on production. The centrepiece stop-motion sequence features a knitted 'Walkie Talkie Man' puppet scaling a Capitol Records building and being destroyed by unraveling, a one-take-only sequence, as the puppet could not be reconstructed after unraveling. Plexiglass shooting rigs were used to hold yarn in place frame-to-frame. The video premiered February 10, 2004, and received 5 MTV VMA nominations (including Breakthrough Video, Best Special Effects, Best Art Direction) and 1 Grammy nomination.
