Its road-trip narrative and rural northern English setting constitute foundational iconography for the band's long-term cultural mythology. Context: Released 5 October 1992 as The Verve's third single on Hut Recordings (a Virgin imprint), Gravity Grave arrived at a pivotal transitional moment: shoegaze was beginning to cede press coverage to the emerging Britpop scene centred on Suede and Blur, yet The Verve's freeform psychedelic guitar work and Richard Ashcroft's unpredictable vocals kept them critically vital. The band had been signed by Hut in 1991 after forming in Wigan in 1990, and all three of their 1992 singles topped the UK Indie charts. The video's road-movie grammar — anonymous northern English landscape, American muscle car, diner stop — creates a mythology of dislocation that would become central to the band's identity before their commercial breakthrough with Urban Hymns in 1997.
