Engraving of miners crushing ore by the old Mexican method

An engraving by Gustave-Adolphe Chassevent-Bacques showing gold ore being crushed by the method Mexican miners had long used in the region, published in the French travel journal Le Tour du monde. Mexican techniques and labour shaped the early California diggings before industrial mills arrived. The plate appeared in volume five of the journal.
