Arnold Genthe's view of the city on earthquake day

Arnold Genthe photographed San Francisco on 18 April 1906, the morning the earthquake struck and the fires began. Genthe was already known for years of street photography in Chinatown, and his earthquake images became among the most reproduced records of the disaster. The transparency is held by the Library of Congress.
