A cropped close-up from a studio portrait of George Gordon, the San Francisco industrialist who founded the city's first sugar refinery and laid out the Rincon Hill enclave of South Park. It was taken by photographer Carl Hedler before Gordon's death in 1869. The original plate is held at Stanford.
