Sheridan Harvey, women's studies specialist at the Library of Congress, traces how the Rosie the Riveter image was built and what the women behind it actually did. The corrective matters in the Bay Area, where the shipyard workforce included over 6,000 Black workers across the four Richmond yards and around 1,000 Black women, photographed for the Office of War Information by E. F. Joseph, the first known Black professional photographer in the region.
