Sid LeProtti and the music of the vice quarter

Jazz researcher Dave Radlauer on pianist Sid LeProtti and the Barbary Coast music scene, built on the district's own venues and recorded recollections. The quarter's clubs included Purcell's So Different Club at 520 Pacific, Black-owned and home to the So Different Jazz Band, and the Thalia at 732 Pacific with its double-tiered slummers' balconies. LeProtti remembered the literal last night in March 1921, when a corporal walked in and stopped the music at one o'clock.
