His rendered planetary flybys — Voyager approaching Jupiter, arriving at Saturn's rings, gliding past Uranus and Neptune — were broadcast on television news during each planetary encounter, watched by hundreds of millions of viewers. Blinn's visualizations were, for most of that audience, the first computer-generated imagery they had ever seen. Technically, Blinn was inventing the rendering techniques as he went. The Blinn-Phong shading model (1977), bump mapping (1978), and environment mapping (1976) are his contributions to computer graphics fundamentals, and they were developed specifically to make the JPL visualizations look right — believable planets, believable atmosphere, believable specular light off Saturn's rings. Every modern real-time rendering pipeline still uses variants of these techniques. What Blinn demonstrated to a mass audience, over a decade, was that computer graphics could be scientifically accurate and aesthetically satisfying at the same time. The Voyager flybys were not art, exactly — they were science communication — but their visual craft was extraordinary, and the decisions Blinn made about framing, color, timing, and composition were genuinely artistic. He later created similar visualizations for The Mechanical Universe educational series at Caltech (1985). Blinn is still alive. His contributions to graphics fundamentals place him alongside Sutherland and Catmull in the field's technical genealogy. Lore Blinn was a PhD student at the University of Utah — in the same graphics lab as Ed Catmull, Henri Gouraud, and Alvy Ray Smith — before joining JPL. His Voyager visualizations were produced on JPL's in-house systems without commercial rendering tools. Carl Sagan's Cosmos (1980) used Blinn animations extensively. He received the Computer Graphics Achievement Award at SIGGRAPH 1983, and the MacArthur Fellowship in 1991. He is known among graphics researchers for his long-running CG column in IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications.
