The program it describes, running on Lincoln Laboratory's TX-2 computer, was the first interactive graphical system anyone had built. The user held a light pen — a pointing device that sensed the electron beam as it passed beneath the pen's tip — and drew figures directly on a cathode-ray-tube display. The figures were not static. They could be scaled, rotated, replicated, copy-pasted, and constrained to geometric relationships that Sketchpad enforced dynamically: draw a line segment, specify that it should stay parallel to another, and the program would preserve the relationship through any subsequent manipulation. Sketchpad was a PhD dissertation and an engineering achievement, and it was also the single most important event in the prehistory of computer art. Every visual tool that followed — every CAD program, every 3D modeler, every image editor, every vector-drawing application, every interactive installation that uses pointing-device input — descends from the interaction paradigm Sutherland demonstrated on the TX-2. Alan Kay, who saw the demo at MIT as a student and would later design the Xerox Alto and the Smalltalk language, has said repeatedly that Sketchpad is the most important program ever written. The claim is defensible. What Sketchpad made possible for art specifically was the idea of real-time interactive drawing on a computer. Until 1963 the computer-art question was: given a program written in advance, what images does the program produce? Sketchpad changed the question. Now it was: given a user drawing in real time, what does the computer enable? The shift is structural. Sketchpad separates computer-generated art from computer-assisted art, and most of what now counts as digital art — from net art to VR sculpture to interactive installation — lives on the computer-assisted side of that line. Sutherland went on to found Evans & Sutherland, invent the head-mounted display, and supervise generations of computer-graphics PhDs including Alan Kay, Jim Clark, and Edwin Catmull. He received the Turing Award in 1988. He is still alive, eighty-seven in 2026, one of the last living figures from the very beginning of the field. Lore Sutherland wrote Sketchpad and his PhD dissertation in parallel between 1961 and 1963, advised by Claude Shannon. The TX-2 computer he worked on filled an entire room at MIT Lincoln Laboratory; the light pen was an input device he helped design himself. When he demonstrated Sketchpad to visitors he liked to constrain one line to stay perpendicular to another, drag it around, and watch their faces. Alan Kay, who saw the demo as a graduate student, has said in multiple interviews that Sketchpad is the most important program ever written — a claim that sounds extravagant until you try to name a more influential one. Sutherland is still alive in 2026, still occasionally giving talks, one of the very last living figures from the field's actual beginning.
