Wild Horses

Horses evolved in North America, crossed into Asia, and then vanished from the continent that made them for about ten thousand years, until Spanish ships brought them back. Everywhere they got loose they became something nobody had a word for: not wildlife, not livestock, not quite wild. Twelve countries have since answered that question twelve different ways. Australia calls them an invasive pest and shoots them from helicopters. Japan protects one herd as a Natural Monument. Canada invented the word "naturalized" and lets a North Atlantic sandbar population live and die untouched. Britain calls them private property with owners and ancient commons rights. The United States protected them in 1971 as "living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit", a statute that answers a cultural question and carefully avoids the biological one, and now keeps 58,000 of them in corrals and leased pastures at two thirds of the programme budget. The classification was never settled by science. It was chosen, and then the science was recruited. This archive follows the horses and the argument: the Pleistocene bones, the Plains nations who built a civilisation on them in a century, the mustangers and the pet-food trade, Wild Horse Annie and the schoolchildren, the helicopters over Kosciuszko and Nevada, and the people on every side who think they are the ones protecting them.

A chronological documentary of 1,458 moments spanning 1540–2026 on Loreline.

  40. - Across the West, wild horses are enduring another devastating roundup season.. 💔 At the Bible Springs Complex roundup, one moment was especially heartbreaking. A tiny foal, estimated to be just one month old, became separated from its family and kept running up the wings into the trap when the rest of the band jumped the jute wings to escape. At temporary holding, the foal was laying in a pen alone, occasionally calling out for the family he had lost. The foal was transferred to foster care wit

  45. - This is what freedom looks like.. 🤎 Just days before these wild horses were removed, they were living exactly as they were meant to: roaming wide-open landscapes, staying with their families, and moving across the lands they’ve called home for generations. Then, everything changed. Their lives were disrupted. Their freedom was taken. The places they knew as home became a memory. This is why we fight. 🐴 Not for horses behind fences. Not for helicopter roundups. But for moments like this, wh

  47. - Listen to those cries.. ’t just sounds. They’re mothers calling for their foals. Family bands searching for one another. Wild horses and burros experiencing fear and confusion as helicopters chase them across the very landscapes they’ve called home for generations. Every roundup tears families apart, strips away their freedom, and pushes them one step closer to a lifetime in government holding facilities. This is the reality wild horses and burros continue to face. But we refuse to

  51. - More than 700 Lahontan wild horses lost their freedom last month.. 💔 Our Conservation Director, Tracy Wilson writes in her opinion piece for the Reno Gazette Journal, the Lahontan roundup is another painful example of a broken system. Instead of preventing overpopulation through humane, science-based management, federal agencies continue to rely on costly helicopter roundups that remove wild horses from the lands they call home. At Lahontan, the Appropriate Management Level is just 7-10 hors
  52. - Rescue isn’t one dramatic day at an auction…. … We have to care for these animals every single day afterward ❤️ And when “these animals” means over 600 rescued mustangs… feeding time gets a little interesting 😂🐎 You definitely aren’t walking around with 600 feed buckets!! So THIS is how we do it. Our feed wagon dispenses a continuous line of feed hundreds of feet long while an entire herd of very enthusiastic mustangs comes RUNNING for breakfast. They get fed daily in addition to the abundan

  60. - Sometimes, one moment can say everything.. 🌈🐴 After a full roundup swept through Mono Lake, taking the wild horses who once roamed these shores, one horse somehow remained. When Cheryl and Jazmyn (pictured) came to the shoreline to honor the horses who were lost, they never expected to encounter him. One horse. Still wild. Still free. 🤎 His survival feels like a miracle, but it’s also a reminder of everything these animals have lost and everything we still have to protect. Wild horses dese
  61. - Her eyes at the end. 🥹 It amazes me constantly how much this community does for wild horses like Sonny who have found themselves at the end of the line, headed for slaughter. 65. - Animals who were born to roam across open landscapes are instead confined behind fences, separated from the fr. 60,000 wild horses and burros are in government holding. And the cycle continues... Round up. Remove. Hold. Repeat. Families and bands are disrupted. Horses and burros are taken from their homes. Taxpayer dollars are spent keeping them in confinement. Then, more animals are removed from the range. This is not a solution. It is a system in crisis. And c
  66. - Hundreds of wild horses are currently confined at the Palomino Valley Wild Horse and Burro Center in Nevada, i. 💔 Many of you have been asking if they are safe as the Bug Fire and Stallion Fire burn nearby. Now, they are being held in corrals as wil
  67. - Why Is the Bureau of Land Management Killing Cremello Horses?. Scott Beckstead of Animal Wellness Action is asked why BLM euthanised cremello horses and what the veterinary records show. 69. - Rescue isn’t just paying the price on their heads.. ’s paying the price of putting them back together. ❤️ These two BLM mustang mares have already been given an incredible gift: A donor paid their bail. Their lives have been secured. But getting them out of the lot is only the very beginning of their rescue!!! Horses coming from this lot are routinely thin and depleted, and when these two girls arrive at Nirvana, we expect the next 3-6 months to be about one thing: Putting them back toge
  70. - I wish they could see what’s waiting on the other side ️. ❤️ In the first clip, these wild horses are heading toward processing at the auction. In a few moments they’ll enter the chute. People will touch them. Poke them with a needle and take their blood. Glue numbers in their hair. Then send them through a maze of pens and chutes and ultimately through the sale ring where kill buyers wait to buy the unwanted wild horses America has cast away. They don’t understand any of that. They only know t

  1. - Salt River wild horses just won an important victory.. 🐴 Governor Katie Hobbs has paused planned removals of the Salt River herd in 2026 and 2027, creating time for a genetic study to help inform future management decisions. This matters because decisions about the herd’s future should be guided by science and its genetic needs, not arbitrary population targets. This victory follows months of sustained advocacy. AWHC supporters took action, signed petitions, shared the campaign, and raised th
  2. - Rotate your phone for a perfect sunset run with wild horses!. !🐴 All of these mustangs were rounded up from their homes across the wild land of the west, and most of them were headed for slaughter when we rescued them. 3. - TODAY IS THE DAY.. ’t even know how to explain how exciting it is to finally say that. I’ve spent so much of my life trying to get people to understand what is happening to our wild horses and, more importantly, to understand who these horses actually are. They have families. They have relationships. They grieve. They remember. And they fight like hell to stay together. That is what makes Blue Zeus so special to me. Narrated by @gerardb

  5. - A win for the Salt River wild horses. 🤎 Planned removals of the herd are officially on hold for 2026 and 2027, giving researchers time to study the herd’s genetics before decisions are made about its future. 8. - America Protected Its Wild Horses Into Cages. An analytical piece on the August 2026 Colorado operation, reporting 122 horses cleared by helicopter with about a thousand more penned nearby, and arguing removals are self-defeating because remaining animals breed faster. Compensatory reproduction is a real and debated mechanism.
  9. - America's Wild HORSES Off To Slaughter "$25 Loophole" Under the Trump Admin?. Commentary on reporting that BLM sales at prices as low as 25 dollars allowed horses to reach slaughter. The New York Times published the investigation on 20 August 2026; BLM denies it and Snopes has examined the claim twice without issuing a rating. Treat as an open investigation.
  10. - Roundup updates from Piceance/East Douglas and the Bible Springs Complex this week are heartbreaking.. 💔 At Piceance/East Douglas, helicopter operations continued as wild horses were captured and removed from their home range, with observers reporting limited visibility and horses and foals arriving visibly tired. 16. - Wild Horses: 6,331 Sold to Slaughter While BLM Denies It | Indistinct Chatter. A podcast citing 6,331 horses sold over 19 months and asserting most went to Canada for slaughter. The sales figures are drawn from the reporting; the destination claim is contested and BLM denies it. Note that BLM tightened its sales policy in mid-July 2026 and a GAO audit was requested on 5 June 2026, both before the New York Times story ran.
  17. - Wild Horse Sales, Slaughter Allegations, and Arizona’s Pause. A summary of investigations into the BLM Sale Authority programme and an Arizona pause. The Sale Authority is a different mechanism from the Adoption Incentive Program, which a court ended in March 2025, and the two should not be merged.
  18. - The New York Times just published the wild horse slaughter story.. ’s what they left out. 👇 This isn’t new. This isn’t Trump. This has been legal for 22 years , under every president , because of a single paragraph slipped into a spending bill in 2004 with no debate and no vote. And it’s even worse than the article reported. Even horses adopted through the BLM lose ALL federal protection after one year. The moment they’re titled, they can legally be sold to a kill buyer. 26. - This week, the world has been inundated, in the best possible way, with the New York Times article exposing wh. ’s wild horses and the slaughter pipeline. As a nonprofit that has rescued, bailed, and used our funds to haul multiple mustangs and domestic horses out of this pipeline, we are incredibly grateful to finally see this issue reach mainstream media. There are a LOT of emotions right now. But in true WLWH fashion, we figured everyone could use a giggle break. So

  29. - As a photographer who brings you the beauty of wild horses, I also feel an obligation to show you the other si. 2020 Sulphur Springs roundup. Clover’s roundup. I remember watching this foal fall and whispering over and over, “please don’t be dead. Please don’t be dead. Please don’t be dead.” And then th
  30. - The NYT published the wild horse story. Here’s what they left out.. 🐴👇 This has been happening for 22 YEARS under every single administration , because of a loophole called the Burns Amendment that was slipped into law in 2004 with no debate and no vote. And it gets worse. Even horses ADOPTED through the BLM lose all federal protection after one year. The moment they’re titled? They can be legally sold to a kill buyer. We have rescued HUNDREDS of these horses at Nirvana Mustang Sanctuary. W
  31. - I wish people knew that thousands more wild horses than the 3,700 reported in the New York Times article are g. (who are all American wild horses as well) are excluded from the 1971 Wild Horse and Burro Act which legally “protects” wild horses and because of that they have zero federal protection!! They’re unbranded, untracked, and no one usually cares to try to save them. EXCEPT US. Nirvana is home to over 60
  32. - With the New York Times article coming out exposing over 3,700 of America’s beloved wild horses being exported. ’s absolutely GREAT! But there are a LOT of questions left unanswered… If you’re new here- WELCOME to Nirvana Mustang Sanctuary, home to over 600 rescued wild horses who were set to be numbers in that article. They were saved from slaughter by an army of regular people just like YOU who stepped

  34. - KEEP THE PROTECTIONS. CLOSE THE SLAUGHTER PIPELINE.. 37 organizations urging Congress to protect America’s horses by keeping the bipartisan Van Drew-Titus equine protection provisions in the final BUILD America 250 Act. The letter has been sent to D.C. and congressional members. These provisions would prohibit the transportation of horses and other equines across U.S. borders for slaughter for human consumption. Federally protected wild horses and burr
  35. - Two public comment deadlines are approaching for Utah’s wild horses, and your voice can help shape what happen. ⚠️ Range Creek: Comments due September 2 ⚠️ Cedar Mountain: Comments due September 3 At Range Creek, we’re urging the BLM to use current science and data, prioritize fertility control over mass removals, protect genetic viability, and fully consider livestock impacts, land health, and public transparency. At Cedar Mountain, we’re calling for an updated environmental review, a
  36. - With America’s Wild Horses taking the news by storm this week, I wanted to share something happy in the midst. ❤️ Checking on the big herd horseback is SUCH a special experience, and it’s something we have brewing to offer to the public 👀 We’ll be back to sharing more about what’s happening soon- in the meantime please enjoy this glimpse into the life our 600+ wild horses rescued from the slaughter pipeline get to live thanks to this incredible community 🙏🏻
  37. - There won’t be ANY wild horses left in the wild by the end of your lifetime if the round ups continue at this. “Appropriate Management Levels” are scientifically far too low to support genetic diversity. 3,700 BLM Mustangs were shipped to slaughter last year through a legal loophole allowing them to be bought for $25 a piece. Countless reservation mustangs and USFS mustangs also sh
  38. - The SLAUGHTER of protected wild horses? Under Trump, a symbol of the American West is under threat. Interim placeholder pending curation.
  39. - The New York Times wrote about the very issue we’ve been screaming at the top of our lungs and millions were o. !! But the article left out the part that will really make your blood boil. America has 80,000 wild horses living right now on YOUR public land. In the past their numbers were in the 2 millions!!! Every year, the government rounds up thousands of them. BLM horses get warehoused in holding pens that cost taxpayers $100 million a year. Most USFS horses go straight to public aucti
  40. - PICEANCE-EAST DOUGLAS ROUNDUP UPDATE. ’s operation, with no details given. AWHC is demanding transparency and accountability for every horse removed, shipped, and lost. These wild horses deserve better than a system that continues removing them from their home with little oversight. 💔 Follow ongoing roundup updates at the link
  41. - Forever grateful to this community for coming together time and time again to save the lives of America’s Wild. ❤️ Next weekend we are embarking on a rescue mission. We’re going to the Bowie TX Horse Auction, owned by the largest shipper of horses across the border into Mexico for slaughter. There will be wild horses there who need us. We hope to be there to answer the call 🙏🏻🐴❤️ Thanks for being here. Look at all these happy souls enjoying their day in peace. Pla
  42. - When a rescue or sanctuary takes in an animal, most of the time we’re stepping into a story that’s already bee. ’t get the footnotes. We don’t get the context. We just get the animal standing in front of us. We always knew pieces of River’s story. He was born in a holding facility, wasn’t adopted until he was seven, and the person who finally adopted him neglected him. What we didn’t know was everything in between. While digging into the history of our late senior mu
  43. - America’s Mustangs: The Sale, the Loophole, and the Slaughter Pipeline. Argues that BLM cannot demonstrate where sold horses end up because tracking stops at the point of sale. That is the precise mechanism at issue, and it is documented: the 2015 Interior OIG report found Tom Davis bought 1,794 horses at 10 dollars a head and told investigators that asked how many went to Mexico, probably close to all of them.
  44. - The government has been using the same old photos to claim horses on the range are starving to justify roundin. 80,000 wild horses across the American West. The same photos. Recycled for years. To make you believe the removals are for the horses’ own good. They’re not. Any REAL round up footage or footage from the range show perfectly healthy and thriving horses, outside of the occasional elderly or injured horse. Here’s what’s actually happening: Ranchers pay $1.69 to graze cattle on YOUR
  45. - UPDATE: Wild Brumbies in Australia’s Yuraygir National Park remain temporarily protected after Brumby advocate. (DCCEEW) gave a formal undertaking to the Court that no aerial shooting, ground shooting, trapping, or killing of the Yuraygir wild horses will take place until the final determination
  46. - River’s life didn’t start easy. He was born in a government holding pen and never knew freedom. At seven years. ’t always mean care. He was neglected and starved, left in a dirt pen in 100 degree weather with no food, no water, and no shelter. His body score was a 1. He was surviving, not living. Before he came to us, people called him explosive, unpredictable, even said something was wrong with him. And yes, some of that w
