What Washes Up

"Beachcleaning in Norway? Sounds like a peaceful stroll, right? Reality: hauling heavy nets, dragging plastic barrels through deep snow." Ropes grown into the ground. Fridges in the middle of nowhere. Fishing nets that take a whole crew to move. This is the work itself, across Finnmark and the northern islands, and the tonnage it adds up to: over 1,700 tons removed since 2017.

  80. - WHY DO WE CLEAN BEACHES REASONS 1 OF 4.. 're shining light on "Raise Awareness". One of our driver is to raise awareness on the issue so that no more plastic is lost at sea and systematic change in put in place. Companies and individuals have a role to play, whether it is to prevent or to clean existing pollution. Want to lean more on how you can contribute? Check this link here: https://www.inthesameboat.eco/info/ Leave in the comments what action you're taking to stop plastic pollution!
  81. - WHY DO WE CLEAN BEACHES?. 2/4: to protect the wild life An important reason and motivation for for us to clean beaches is animal welfare. We often find animals on the beach zone that suffers from plastic pollution. Sometimes they are still living, but most often they are already dead when we arrive. It can be everything from sheep’s or reindeers who is stuck in commercial fishing nets. Or birds or smaller animals that is stuck or has been eating plastic, that are starving because they don’t have place in their stomach for normal food. In Norway we have laws to protect animal welfare, but it is unfortunately not used in connect

  119. - I still remember the first time I found an animal k*lled by plastic…. ’s skeleton on the rocks, its beak bound shut by a plastic rope. It’s fragile bones, a life cut short. I could only imagine its final moments - starving, flapping, scared, unable to call for help. It’s a sight that stayed with me. Sometimes, we find them in time. A sheep tangled in nets, a reindeer trapped in ghost gear - we cut them loose and they dash, they run, they live. But most of the time, we’re too late. And that’s what keeps me going. 132. - IT’S CALLED SPEAKING FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE LADS!!. !! Yes, it’s bad in a lot of countries (if not most). Norway just really shocked me - because before coming here, I also believed the image - that Norway is this perfect, green, progressive country. And then on some beaches in Northern Norway you find 1 ton of marine litter every 100 metres. So yes, it’s bad everywhere - because the ocean doesn’t care about borders and “untouched” nature unfortunately just doesn’t really exist anymore. But if we are all connected by the same ocean… then the solution is also exactly that! Because we’re going to need all of us - wherever we are - to pr

  136. - Every rope, every net, every oil can removed might save an animal’s…. ! Do not for a second think that a positive action - no matter how small - doesn’t have an impact! What really made me understand that, was when the captain of the cleanup mission I’ve been a part shared some numbers with me: One of their beach cleaners cleans around 30 kg / hour One team of beach cleaners cleans 2000 kg / day And since 2017 we have cleaned 1 800 000 kgs And there are of course so many other people, other crews, all over the world - cleaning up! 138. - When I first came to Norway, I had this image of a picture-perfect…. ’s also this other side of Norway, one that exists behind the country’s carefully curated green façade. There, tons and tons and tons of plastic pollution are suffocating beaches and wild life.
