- — Burning Man 1995. In 1995 some friends invited me to Burning Man. I thought it was an overnight rave, so I grabbed a backpack with a change of clothing and my Super8 camera. It wasn't until we entered Nevada that I realized I was going to a week-long festival in the desert. With no food or shelter, and minimal supplies, I lived off the kindness of friends and strangers. We were a part of the Wicked Sound System dance community, bringing the first DJ sound system to the event. At that time, the music selection at Burning Man was very diverse with live bands (many acoustic) and performance artists dominating the entertainment. Following the first all-night Wicked party, we were asked to move our camp far away so people could sleep—a notion that seem ridiculous today. In 1995, less than 4000 people attended Burning Man, and the event was situated in the very center of center of Black Rock Desert, unlike today where it sits in the corner of the playa (desert). The general lack of rules and boundaries made it an interesting experiment in anarchy and unbounded freedom. This film is unedited—straight from the camera. I only brought two 3.5 minute rolls of film with me (one color and the other black and white), so I rationed film by capturing scenes with short recording—I thought of it as capturing moving photos. I cut out some under-exposed night footage, but the rest is how I shot it. The music is from a favorite 1995 chillout album by Subsurfing called Frozen Ants.

Hollow Earth performs the music for butoh dance troupe Collapsing Silence in front of the Burning Man at the pre-burn party in San Francisco at SOMARTS. This was the pre-performance that culminated in Collapsing Silence and Hollow Earth leading the Procession to burn The Man at Burning Man in Blackrock Desert proper on September 2nd, 1995. The inception of F-Space Documented in 1997 by a German film crew for the film Burning Man 2020, directed by Christoph Gampl and Andreas Kukutsch. #1 Burning Man, Black Rock Desert, NV 8/28/97 F-Space: Jenerik/Port No PA so Scot and Ethan performed on flaming oil drums next to a piano frame where other friends joined in the percussive mayhem. This is also the show where Scot lit himself on fire, had to do the drop and roll, and while drumming on a flaming oil drum smashed his left index finger, blowing all of the meat out of the tip. The jam went on for another half hour while Scot drummed and spread blood all over his body and face. A fitting beginning for F-Space. #2 Burning Man, Black Rock Desert, NV 8/29/97 F-Space: Jenerik/Port Equilibrium Scot’s composition “Equilibrium” performed on Sub Linear, with Ethan’s noisy guitar wash over and through the piece. Cold and windy as hell. Sub-Linear was mounted between two oil drums that were set on fire. When Scot broke Sub Linear in half at the end of the set, the whole contraption fell off the stage and took a chunk out of photographer Gregory Cowley’s arm. This provided Greg with commemorative scarification of the first real F-Space performance. #3 Burning Man, Black Rock Desert, NV 8/31/97 F-Space: Jenerik/Port/ Tch'Kung Other artists: Tch'Kung F-Space performance into Tch'Kung performance into a jam between the two bands. Scot and Ethan improvised on the oil drum version of Sub-Linear. The oil drums made nice big flames when pummeled. Documented by a German film crew for the film Burning Man 2020. It took Scot over 100 strikes to break sub-linear in half. Ethan kept pace with him swinging full force into the oil drums. The audience went Ballistic and can be seen in full Dionysian frenzy in the film.

- — Burning Man 2023 | The Playa @ 4K. Back in Black Rock City for year number two of Burning Man. I brought the 4K camera out this year and shot everything in slow motion with only my 85mm Sony lens. We arrived early Sunday morning to find an open camping spot around 3:26 & H. The majority of the video was shot on the playa, showcasing art, sculptures, art cars, dust storms, etc. during the sunset and sunrise. Once the rainstorm hit on Friday night, I didn't take my camera out again until Sunday, which means I missed recording the mud man that was picked up by international news outlets. We left a couple of hours before noon on Monday, which means we missed this year's man burning. Favorite art this year was either Elder Mother by Charles Gadeken or the temple(temple of the heart) by Ela Madej & Reed Finlay.
