  17. — The Coconut crab (Birgus latro): Big, strong, and at risk!. ! 🪶These resilient crabs, which can live up to 60 years, are the largest land-dwelling crustaceans, with legs spanning up to 1 metre and hunting birds all across Aldabra. 🥥After females release their eggs in the water, the larvae float on coconut rafts for weeks as they develop, then sink to the sea floor and crawl up to the shore, where they will spend the rest of their adult life. 🏝️Once on land, it takes 5 years to reach reproductive age. Luxury development happening in these early critical years can result in a drastic reduction in population numbers, which could take decades to restore. Other concerns: ‼️Regulations to avoid poaching by guests and staff have not been disclosed. ‼️We have seen the threat that invasive ants post on Christmas Islands, and the risk of this happening on Assomption has not been addressed. He describes Aldabra as “one of the most inhospitable places in the world”, emphasising the impressive resilience of these “modern-day dinosaurs”. Lacking the ability to sweat, tortoises escape the heat by finding refuge in caves to avoid “baking to death in their shells”, fiercely competing with each other as the “supply of shady places is low”. Competition is only going to get harder and harder as these tortoises face growing challenges to their survival in this already harsh environment. The construction of the luxury resort development on Assomption Island risks destroying their habitat (mostly caves), and who knows what the impact will be when tourist groups start going to Aldabra Atoll, just 27 km away, where tortoises also compete for shade in caves and under the few trees that grow there.   80. — Meet the common mudskipper (Periophthalmus kalolo), also known as “Kabosoter” in Creole.. Unlike most fish, the Kabosoter spends nearly 90% of its time OUT of water, using their strong pectoral fins to “walk” on land, making it a familiar sight in Seychelles’ mangroves. 🐟🌿 Its eyes are close-set and on top of its head, allowing it to see outside of the water. Kabosoters are also able to spend long periods of time on land as they can breathe through their skin! They are opportunistic scavengers and important beach cleaners, eating everything from plant material to marine debris, and even turtle hatchlings 🌿 They are ecological indicators of human disturbance, meaning that presence (or absence) of these crabs tells us a lot about how much human disturbance a beach has experienced. These giants can also live up to 40 years. They get their name from the big, potato-shaped blotches scattered across their pale bodies. ‼️They are territorial and aggressive, and feed on a variety of fish and invertebrates. 🎣The potato grouper is a slow growing species, meaning that they take longer to reach sexual maturity and are able to reproduce. This means that their populations are vulnerable to fishing pressures, which is why they are a protected species on Aldabra.   123. — Meet the Masked Booby (Sula dactylatra) Also called the “masked gannet” or “blue-faced…. booby,” they are the largest of all booby species. You can easily identify them by the dark, mask-like patch of skin around their face and throat, which contrasts with their pale yellow bills and yellow eyes. 🤿To catch their favourite meal (flying fish), they can drop from heights of up to 100 metres to hit the ocean at high speeds. Although silent at sea, their colonies erupt in noise, with males having a distinctive whistle, and females having a loud honk 🎺 They prefer nesting in colonies on remote atolls and cays, choosing flat, open ground to lay their eggs. 🤍 Although they are considered a species of “Least Concern,” their populations are decreasing due to climate change and the overfishing of tuna (which helped drive prey to the surface for the boobies to catch).

Once pushed to the brink of extinction, these giants now boast being the largest population of giant tortoise population in the world; all thanks to long-term conservation and habitat protection. 🌊 Aldabra is also one of the most important nesting sites for green sea turtles in the Western Indian Ocean. Studies have shown that nesting activity has increased by an estimated 410−665% since 1968 (Pritchard et al. 2022) – an extraordinary sign of population recovery after historical overexploitation. Shy and notoriously elusive, dugongs rarely make contact with humans, making encounters like this especially memorable. The dugong is known by several names: 🐄 sea cow / vache de mer - though actually more closely related to elephants than cows 🧜‍♀️ mermaid - sailors in the Indian Ocean once mistook them for mythical creatures 🌿 gardener of the sea - grazing up to 40kg of seagrass every day As they feed, dugongs often attract small fish that shelter nearby or feed in the stirred-up seagrass around them - a quiet reminder of how connected life in the lagoon really is. Across the Indian Ocean - from the Maldives to Madagascar - we are watching coral systems collapse. Warming seas are the main driver - and this year a strong El Niño raises the risk of even hotter ocean temperatures and widespread coral bleaching. Different species sharing the same space. This is their home. This is what a healthy ecosystem looks like. On World Sea Turtle Day, we think about everything a sea turtle faces just to survive. They hatch here, swim thousands of miles across the ocean, and then - years, sometimes decades later - find their way back to lay their own eggs.
