Government & Politics
Seychelles politics as the fight ran through it: the Planning Authority, two presidents, the stop notice and the variation notice that quietly undid it, and the 2025 election that turned on this island.
Part of Aldabra
103 moments in this segment.
- — Things are moving fast and Aldabra needs your help more than ever.. The Seychelles Planning Authorities have approved of the hotel development on Assomption. Time truly is of the essence now. Your voice may be the one that changes everything. #friendsofaldabra #savealdabra Petition in our captions
- — Who Speaks for Assomption?. ? 🌴 Seychelles is celebrated globally for its conservation efforts, but is that reputation truly deserved? 🤔 The ongoing development on Assomption Island raises serious concerns about broken promises, unchecked exploitation, and the quiet sacrifice of our natural heritage. It’s time to ask the hard questions: 🌱 Are we prioritizing profit over preservation? 🌊 What will be left for future generations? Let’s hold our leaders accountable and fight to protect what makes Seychelles unique. 🇸🇨 Check out the full article up on our site now! 🗣 Share your thoughts below. Together, we can make a difference. 💬 #WhoSpeaksForAssomption #SeychellesConservation #ProtectOurIslands #BlueEconomy #SeychellesHeritage #SustainableDevelopment #IslandVoices #SaveAssomption #MarineConservation #PreserveNature
- — Let’s delve into this controversial and deeply contradicting issue.. Seychelles has proudly positioned itself as a leader in global conservation, even swapping debt for nature protection in an internationally celebrated move. This is marketed as a shining example of environmental stewardship. But how do we reconcile this narrative with the reality on the ground? How is it that we’re selling off prime wetlands and vital ecosystems on Mahé, and even entire islands, for profit and luxury developments? 🏝️💰 When leaders champion conservation abroad yet ignore the voices of their own people at home, as seen with developments like Anse La Mouche, Cheval Blanc and now Aldabra and Assomption, how can this be justified? How can we fight to protect our natural heritage while this hypocrisy continues to undermine our efforts? In light of recent scandals and the growing global spotlight on environmental activism, is this truly the legacy we want for Seychelles? Let’s start the conversation. 💬
- — We’ve all seen it before: leaders saying one thing, then doing the opposite.. The hypocrisy is infuriating — and somehow they keep getting away with it. One day, President Wavel Ramkalawan signs off on a luxury hotel development on Assomption Island. The next, he’s front and centre in a fancy film with @nature_africa, @savenatureorg, @seyccat, @m_a_c_c_e, and others, making sweeping statements about the importance of protecting the ocean. While destruction is approved in business meetings, greenwashing is broadcast to the world. But political games aside, it’s the people of Seychelles — and future generations — who will lose what can never be replaced. #FriendsOfAldabra #Seychelles #Aldabra #Greenwashing
- — Who can protect Aldabra?. ? 🌍🐢 The Seychelles Islands Foundation (SIF) was created to safeguard this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its mission: strict biosecurity and independent protection. But @sif_seychelles’s stance has shifted. Once opposed to development on Assomption Island, it now appears to be aligned with the developers as it takes on the biosecurity officer role on Assomption island. SIF’s independence is in question. Its board is appointed by the President, making it vulnerable to political pressure. Instead of standing up to harmful development plans on nearby Assomption Island, SIF has been drawn into the project, taking on a role that risks turning it from protector to facilitator. This includes new reports suggestion that they are turning a blind eye to developer wishes to import soil and plants to the island which brings huge risk of invasive species. If those tasked with defending Aldabra are silenced, who is left to safeguard it? Well...that’s partly why we exist! But we can’t do it alone! Aldabra deserves better. SIF must return to its original mission: protect Aldabra – no matter the cost. Seychellois and International board members need to speak out: BernardGeorges, AureleAndre, ColonelJeanAttala of @sdf_seychelles Prof Nick Graham of @lancasteruni, Bernard Jackson of @mcbseychelles, @romano.laurence of @sbc.sc, Sheriffa Morel, Marie-May Jeremie of @seyccat, Isabelle Ravinia, Paul Rose, Sir Tim Smit, founder of the @edenprojectcornwall, Dr AnnaS penceley, Prof Lindsay Turnbull of @oxford_uni, Dr Frauke Fleischer-Dogley SIF partners also need to speak out: @conventiononwetlands, @unesco, #MangrovesfortheFuture, @gef_global_environment, @universityofseychelles, @ics_seychelles, @gvitravel, @odensezoo, @uzh.ch, @natural_history_museum #SaveAldabra #FriendsOfAldabra #Seychelles #Conservation #UNESCO
- — STOP means STOP… or does it?. ? On 15 May 2025, Planning Authorities issued a stop notice for construction on Assomption Island, citing environmental concerns and calling for all work to STOP. Yet… construction appears to have continued. 🤔 Since the beginning, something in the Assomption timelines just doesn’t add up. Why is construction allowed to begin before environmental oversight is established? And who in government is overriding Planning Authorities and waving these notices aside? And what is their motivation to do so? We’ve been told that when Seychellois builders launch a project, rules are strictly enforced. But for international developers, it seems the red carpet is rolled out instead. Our concerns are two-fold: 1️⃣ Double standards: international projects appear to bypass rules and procedures. 2️⃣ Environmental neglect: why weren’t strict protection measures in place from day one — and why are they still missing today? This isn’t just about one island. It’s about transparency, accountability, and equal treatment for all. #Seychelles #Aldabra #Assomption #ProtectAldabra

- — With no clear majority in the first round of presidential elections, the Seychellois…. population will be voting again next week and has to decide between Wavel Ramkalawan (Linyon Demokratik Seselwa) and Patrick Herminie (United Seychelles). We’re asking both parties for clarity on their stance regarding the hotel development on Assomption Island: ❓ Will the project actually be stopped? 🏗️ If yes, how will the situation with the developers be handled? 🐢🌿 And more generally, how do they propose to protect Seychellois wildlife and natural heritage moving forward? We hope these questions will be addressed in the next presidential debate. @sbc.sc @unitedseychelles_official @lds.sesel #SeychellesElections #AssomptionIsland #ProtectAldabra #ProtectAssomption #Seychelles

- — Seychelles has elected a new president - and with him, new promises about Assomption…. Island. Dr. Patrick Herminie’s inauguration will take place on Sunday 26th October. 🇸🇨 ⚠️ Dr. Herminie has said construction of the luxury hotel will be “halted.” But “halted” isn’t the same as stopped. ⚖️ We are calling for clarity and accountability. Seychellois citizens deserve transparency, consultation, and protection of their natural heritage. ⁉️ A lot of questions remain: What happens next? Will construction truly stop? Who decides the island’s future? Will scientists and conservationists be consulted? 🌊 Assomption is ecologically sensitive - every part of it. Any destructive development risks harming nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site, Aldabra. Friends of Aldabra stands firm: we oppose any destructive development on Assomption. We are watching, waiting — and demanding answers. #ProtectAldabra #ProtectAssomption #Seychelles #FriendsofAldabra
- — We’re taking a closer look at President-elect Dr Patrick Herminie’s recent statements…. and what they could mean for Assomption Island. On 15 October, President-elect Dr Herminie spoke at a press conference on @sbc.sc. In his statement, he said he would issue a stop notice on the luxury hotel project, review documents, and “sit down to assess what’s the truth.” Dr Herminie mentions that the investors are two Syrian brothers behind Assets Group. According to the BBC, Assets Group is a Qatar-based firm and may be associated with the Qatari royal family. While promising to pause the hotel project, Dr Herminie also proposed turning parts of Assomption into a coast guard base “open to international navies for a fee.” With repeated mentions of India, this has revived memories of the proposed Indian military base on Assomption - a project cancelled in 2018 after strong public opposition. Since his statement, Seychellois - both online and offline - have voiced growing concern about the possibility of any form of military or foreign-controlled presence on the island. Dr Herminie’s vision has not explicitly included a military base, but his references to a “coast-guard base open to international navies, for a fee,” and to discussions with India, have left many uncertain about his plans for Assomption. Ultimately, his statement leaves us with more questions than answers. So far, Dr Herminie and his team have not responded to our invitation to meet. We remain clear: Friends of Aldabra does not support any military base on Assomption. This island’s value cannot be measured in money or strategy alone. 🐢 The Seychellois people deserve clarity and transparency. #ProtectAssomption #ProtectAldabra #Seychelles #FriendsofAldabra

Dr. Herminie’s announcement to “halt” the Assomption development marks a turning point — but raises urgent questions. We are not under any illusion: the fight is far from over. His statements, interviews, and social contract raise many questions. While the President-elect has pledged to investigate what happened on Assomption, he has yet to clarify when this will begin, who will lead it, and whether independent scientists and conservationists will be allowed access to the island. He has also introduced new language: referring to “biosecurity”, “sensitive” and “non-sensitive” zones on Assomption. Statements on the value of the lease, a coast guard base, possible usage by international navies, and possible ties with India (and Europe) is fuelling concern about what may come next. Could economic or geopolitical interests once again override ecological integrity? Friends of Aldabra has reached out to the incoming administration requesting a meeting, but has not yet received a response. We will continue to seek answers, push for transparency. Friends of Aldabra is committed to stop destructive development on Assomption. #ProtectAssomption #ProtectAldabra #FriendsofAldabra

- — Where is the stop notice?. ? President Herminie said construction on Assomption Island would be halted — but there’s still no official confirmation that a stop notice has been filed. @victoria_duthil asks some key questions: ❓ Has the stop notice been filed? 👥 Who will serve on the “independent” commission? 🕒 When will the investigation begin? 🗣️ When will Seychellois citizens be consulted? We’re analysing every new statement about Assomption - including those made by Barry Faure and Geralda Desaubin (Deputy CEO of SIF) in the National Assembly yesterday. More on those next week! 🌍 Every day without action means continued risk to the nature on Assomption and Aldabra. 🤝 We remain open to meeting with the new administration and relevant institutions to discuss the way forward. #ProtectAssomption #ProtectAldabra #FriendsOfAldabra

Last week, on Thursday 30th October, Barry Faure spoke at the National Assembly on the Assomption Island project. His statement helped clarify some of the confusion around the new government’s plans: 🔹President Herminie has not announced a military base. That claim is misinformation. 🔹Ambassador Faure referred to a small Seychellois coast guard base, focused on maritime security within Seychelles’ waters. 🔹Faure said that the immediate priorities were: (1) the pause of the hotel development, and (2) an independent investigative commission. But an official stop notice has not yet been confirmed. 🔹Faure mentioned that Seychelles may accept help from “friends”. Though what this means in practice remains unclear and will need clarifying. - — Nearly a month has passed since Dr. (1/9). Nearly a month has passed since Dr. Herminie announced on October 15, 2025, that he would halt construction on Assomption Island. Yet alarming images are circulating online showing construction is still underway. While the source appears credible, we are seeking metadata to confirm the exact date these photos were taken This government promised transparency - where is it? We again ask Dr. Herminie and his new cabinet: where is the stop notice? How much longer will Assomption suffer? The government has spoken to the press multiple times, yet an actual stop notice has still not been issued. Why is it so difficult to take this action? These photos reveal how little we truly know about what is happening on Assomption and behind the government’s closed doors. It is becoming increasingly urgent to: ⚠️ Issue a stop notice immediately ⚠️ Guarantee scientists and conservationists full, unrestricted access to assess the true impact: only an independent assessment can fully uncover the scope of environmental damage inflicted - and ongoing - on Assomption The clock is ticking. - — AMAZING NEWS! During his presidential address, President Herminie confirmed two…. incredible breakthroughs: ✅ A STOP NOTICE has been officially filed, bringing all construction on Assomption Island to an IMMEDIATE HALT. ✅ A commission has been tasked with investigating the project and will be led by the highly respected former Chief Justice, Mathilda Twomey. This is a monumental moment. It feels like the first real step towards ending the harm caused by this development and ensuring the protection of Assomption and the World Heritage Site of Aldabra. 🐋🐢🪸🐠🦎 To each and everyone that has been a part of this journey and lent their voice to raise awareness around this issue: This win is a testament to your relentless passion. Your voice made the difference! We celebrate this win together and thank the new government for staying true to its commitments Our work continues! We must remain vigilant, engaged, and focused on the permanent protection of these irreplaceable islands. 🐢🦀🪸🐋🦋🦎 #ProtectAldabra #ProtectAssomption #Seychelles #FriendsofAldabra

He added that the Seychelles Defense Force is on standby to reinforce the order if the developers refuse to comply. This is a significant moment for those fighting to protect Assomption and Aldabra. 🛑⚠️ For transparency and public trust, the stop notice must be made available. @m_e_c_e_n_r @seychelles_planning_authority, we call on you to release the stop notice document. #ProtectAssomption #ProtectAldabra #FriendsofAldabra #Seychelles
- — Today, and met with President Herminie at State House We discussed the urgent need for…. Today, @victoriaduthil and @seychellesatheart met with President Herminie at State House🇸🇨 We discussed the urgent need for a comprehensive, one-year biodiversity assessment on Assomption Island, which must be completed before any decision is taken regarding the Stop Notice. We welcomed the President’s agreement that this level of scientific rigour is essential. A one-year assessment is essential to capture seasonal changes, breeding cycles and migratory patterns. This is not a formality, but the scientific foundation needed to understand Assomption and guide future decisions. Friends of Aldabra has proposed a multi-stakeholder assessment, overseen by a mixed committee of Seychellois and international experts, with civil society represented. The aim is to provide the Government of Seychelles with a strong, transparent and defensible scientific basis for decisions affecting Assomption and Aldabra. We remain fully engaged and will continue to push for the standards Assomption and future generations deserve. Thank you for standing with us. #ProtectAssomption #ProtectAldabra #Seychelles
- — Following our meeting on Monday, President Herminie has committed to a comprehensive…. one-year biodiversity assessment for Assomption Island. The results of this assessment will inform future decisions for the Island - including what happens to the Stop Notice. This marks major progress: for Assomption, for Aldabra and for Seychelles. It feels like an incredibly meaningful moment. Protecting what makes our islands exceptional requires time, science and courage! 🌟🌟🌟 Friends of Aldabra has shared their vision for a best-in-class biodiversity assessment with the Government of the Seychelles. In her interview with @sbc.sc, @victoria_duthil stated “In order for this biodiversity assessment to be done properly and for the trust of Seychellois people and for the international community to be regained, a proper biodiversity assessment has to be done for at least a year.” We remain very much alert, but also incredibly hopeful. 🐠🦋🐋🐢🦈🐬🦀🦎🪸🐚 #ProtectAssomption #ProtectAldabra #Seychelles
- — Last week, it was announced on, that the Minister of Environment is setting up an…. Last week, it was announced on @sbc.sc, that the Minister of Environment is setting up an Inter-Sectoral Environmental Task Force for Assomption. The Task Force will be chaired by Minister Marie-May Jeremie, with Dr Nirmal Shah as Deputy Chair, and includes senior representatives from IDC, SIF, the Planning Authority, Lands and Biosecurity, with technical officers attending as observers. Friends of Aldabra supports the creation of a dedicated task force to coordinate urgent environmental action - including the important need for a comprehensive biodiversity assessment of Assomption. However, we also have serious concerns about the composition of the Task Force. ⁉️ As it stands, the Task Force members are the exact same group of organisations involved in the Assomption development from the start. They shaped the problematic situation we are now trying to address, and under their watch the island’s wildlife has been harmed. The related governance failures are now being examined in a public inquiry. For these reasons, we question whether this Task Force can deliver truly independent, multi-sectoral oversight, particularly without civil society or the public’s voice at the table. Many relevant Seychellois individuals and organisations - including Friends of Aldabra - are not represented within the core membership of the Task Force. Seychelles is rich with conservation experts, scientists, and civil society leaders who have demonstrated their capacity to contribute meaningfully to environmental protection initiatives. ⚠️ There is an inherent contradiction in asking the same entities that failed to prevent environmental harm to now lead its correction. What do you think? Isn’t it time to change the story of Assomption? Friends of Aldabra remains committed to protecting Aldabra and Assomption. 🐠🦩🦋🐢🐋🪸🐬 #ProtectAldabra #ProtectAssomption #Seychelles
- — Last week, the Ministry of Environment announced a new Task Force to oversee…. environmental action on Assomption Island. At Friends of Aldabra, we welcome this step, it’s something we formally proposed to President Herminie in December. But we also have serious concerns about the structure and membership of this Task Force. The same institutions that allowed this crisis to unfold are now being asked to investigate and fix it. That raises real questions about independence, accountability and conflicts of interest. ⚠️🔍🏛️ ✉️ We have formally written to the Ministry of Environment to express these concerns and to call for broader representation - including civil society, independent NGOs and Seychellois scientists and experts. Seychellois deserve a Task Force they can trust. What do YOU think? Share your thoughts below. #ProtectAssomption #ProtectAldabra #Seychelles
- — This video is a compilation of excerpts from President Herminie’s State of the Nation…. Address delivered this week on Tuesday 27th January. In his speech, the President publicly committed to: 🌊 protecting Seychelles’ oceans, forests, reefs and islands ⚖️ governing transparently and in the public interest 💚 putting long-term environmental protection before short-term profit 🌱 safeguarding the future for generations to come Friends of Aldabra hopes to see these commitments translated into action through: ➡️ The President upholding his commitment to enforce the stop notice for at least one year, ensuring a comprehensive biodiversity assessment is carried out ➡️ Clarity around the Assomption Task Force: including its mandate, membership, and how the public will be meaningfully engaged in shaping decisions about the island’s future As Seychelles marks 50 years of Independence, these words, commitments and their translation into action shape legacy. As always, Friends of Aldabra is watching.
- — There have been many new announcements linked to Assomption.. But what’s actually happening? And has anything really changed in the way the island is being managed? ⁉️ This video is a call to stay alert, keep asking questions, and not get lost in the confusion. As headlines multiply, some things just don’t add up: • Why aren’t we waiting for the Commission of Inquiry results to guide next steps? • Why is SIF leading the biodiversity assessment? • Why are the same people and institutions - those who got us in this mess - now in charge of “fixing” the situation? • Why have no independent voices been welcomed? • And why would developers inject more money unless they’ve been given assurances that they will get the hotel they want? 👇 What doesn’t add up for you? Let us know in the comments. #ProtectAssomption #ProtectAldabra #Seychelles

Friends of Aldabra is opposed to the establishment of any foreign military base on Assomption. ❌ During his 17 February press conference, President Patrick Herminie stated that as part of a new maritime agreement with India, Seychelles would be building a coast guard facility on Assomption that would be managed by the Seychelles Defence Forces. The project would be supported by India. Presented as a coast guard facility, the announcement has revived widespread public concern online, with many Seychellois drawing parallels to the previously proposed Indian military base on Assomption that citizens strongly opposed in 2018. While existing coast guard facilities are already on the island and some maritime security presence may be useful in principle, we remain deeply skeptical without clear details on the true scale and purpose of this new proposal. At present, key details about the scale, scope and environmental safeguards of the proposed facility remain unclear. 🌫️ Transparency, environmental best practice, and meaningful public consultation must guide any decision affecting Assomption especially considering its proximity to Aldabra Atoll, a UNESCO World Heritage site of global value. 🌊🐢 #ProtectAssomption #ProtectAldabra #Seychelles

- — Multiple decisions.. Limited clarity. Growing public concern. Following the 17th February announcement by President Herminie that India will support the construction of a coast guard facility on Assomption Island - with construction said to be able to begin “at any time” - Seychellois citizens have been raising questions, sharing their concerns, and discussing the future of the island. There are currently multiple processes unfolding at once: 🛥️ Proposed coast guard facility, 🛎️ Halted hotel construction, ⚖️ Ongoing Commission of Inquiry, 🐢 Commitment to a 1-year biodiversity assessment, and, 📍 The Inter-Sectoral Environmental Task Force. It is currently unclear how these different layers will inform each other. Friends of Aldabra is listening to the concerns being voiced and has begun compiling public questions to share with the government. At the heart of this moment is a simple principle: decisions affecting our outer islands must be guided by transparency, environmental best practice, and meaningful public participation. “Everyone’s eyes are on Assomption because what happens there reflects who we are as a country and the values that we protect.” #ProtectAssomption #ProtectAldabra #Seychelles
- — Assomption Island was back in the spotlight at the end of February with the following…. events: ▶️ 28 Feb: Hundreds of people protested in Victoria against the proposed coast guard base. ▶️ 27 Feb: SIF published a call for expression of interest for biodiversity assessment professionals. ▶️ 26 Feb: The Environment and Finance Ministries held a joint press conference to address the coast guard base proposal. ▶️ 24 Feb: The Vice-President addressed the National Assembly on the 2026 Defence Budget - with mentions of Assomption. The protest was a clear sign of growing public anger. Many Seychellois maintain their 2018 positioning of: “Tortoises, Not Troops” and that Assomption is not for sale. Some key dynamics which we are observing: 🧶 Assomption Island has become an entangled web of competing commitments made by the government. 🌀 Confusion and uncertainty are deepened by the absence of meaningful engagement with the Seychellois public and independent experts. 🐢 Is the environment becoming an afterthought? In a region as ecologically sensitive as the Aldabra Group, the environment needs to be prioritised. What are your current thoughts on Assomption? #ProtectAssumption #ProtectAldabra #Seychelles
- — On Thursday 5th March at the National Assembly, Environment Minister Marie-May Jeremie…. was asked whether construction of the hotel on Assomption Island had resumed. Minister Jeremie confirmed that, once biosecurity facilities are in place, work will continue on the buildings that are already on the island. This goes against many of the public commitments made by the government This raises serious questions: ⚠️ This contradicts public commitments that construction would wait for the outcome of the Public Inquiry and the 1-year biodiversity assessment. ⚠️ Decisions about Assomption continue to happen behind closed doors, with the public once again being kept in the dark. Seychellois are being informed as an afterthought. ⚠️ There is still no clarity on what a “variation notice” is or what exactly “buildings that have already been built” actually means. ⚠️ How does this inspire trust in the task force? This once again shows that there is an urgent need for independent experts to monitor what is happening on the island. We need eyes that we can trust on Assomption. This development follows revelations during this week’s Public Inquiry that a variation notice had been issued allowing certain construction to proceed, disclosed in testimony by former @sif_seychelles CEO Dr. Frauke Dogley. #ProtectAssomption #ProtectAldabra #Seychelles
- — Once again, Assomption is in the dark.. Once again, decisions are being made behind closed doors. The government has confirmed that construction of parts of the hotel may resume once biosecurity measures are in place. This breaks President Herminie’s December 2025 commitment: no construction for at least a year, until a biodiversity assessment is completed. We only found out because it was mentioned in the final minutes of the @sif_seychelles Public Inquiry deposition. There was no public announcement. No transparency. ⁉️ How can we trust a government that says one thing publicly and does another quietly? ⁉️ How can we trust a Task Force made up of the exact same entities that put us here in the first place? ⁉️ How can we trust developers to suddenly become protectors of the environment? ⁉️ Why are decisions being made before the Public Inquiry report is even published? We do not have eyes on Assomption that we can trust. And frankly, it is exhausting to have to scrutinise every sentence, every hearing, every announcement, just to find out what is really happening to our natural heritage. 😵 Seychellois deserve better. We deserve clarity, a real say, and independent experts we can trust to be our eyes on Assomption.✊ 📧 Email your concerns to the government: info@env.gov.sc #ProtectAssomption #ProtectAldabra #Seychelles
- — Seychellois people have been lied to for MONTHS The 6* luxury resort that has been…. endangering Aldabra Atoll, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the outer islands of Seychelles, was supposed to be halted after the new Seychelles President came into office in October 2025. But in February 2026, the government issued a “variation notice” allowing construction to resume on the island. No-one knew what that meant, and the government never clearly told its people what was happening. ‼️ An independent national investigation has now revealed it allowed construction of OVER 30 of the hotel’s buildings to continue for 5 MONTHS ‼️ The Seychelles government has used strategic silence and half-truths to betray their commitments to Seychellois people and the world. Seychellois people deserve a say in what happens to our islands. We shouldn’t be consistently lied to and de-prioritised in favour of foreign developers. The Seychelles government has been trying to fool its people. ⁉️❌ President Herminie of Seychelles came into office in Oct 2025 with a promise to halt the destructive 6* hotel construction on Assomption Island, complete a full, 1-year biodiversity assessment, and not make any further decisions about the project until the results of a national investigation were released. He issued a construction stop notice… …but in February 2026, a “variation notice” followed. No-one knew what it was. Now the results of the national investigation have been released, and reveal that this “variation notice” allowed construction to continue on over 30 buildings for the past 5 MONTHS?! ‼️ Seychellois people were promised transparency - but these actions have shown the opposite. It’s a pattern of betrayal, Seychellois people are routinely ignored, blind-sided and de-prioritised. Foreign investors appear to come first, always.
