- — Knowing this is what’s at stake.. That’s why @friendsofaldabra are going to the UN Ocean Conference next week, and bringing you @earthalliance along with them! Aldabra is one of the last truly untouched places on Earth-a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to more giant tortoises than people, thriving coral reefs, and species found nowhere else in the world. It is a living time capsule, a place where nature still reigns. But right now, Aldabra is in danger. A luxury tourism development is being pushed forward, ignoring environmental safeguards and public outcry. Land clearing has already started. 🛑We cannot let this happen. If we don’t act now, we risk losing something that can never be replaced. Stay tuned for our takeover of the @earthalliance channels next week as we share updates and ways YOU can help us stop this development! 🚨Start now by contacting decision makers at the link in our bio! @friendsofaldabra 🔗Visit Friendsofaldabra.org and take action through @chilli.app to help us stop this before it’s too late.

- — A month has flown by since the UN Ocean Conference, and looking back on all the… (1/16). A month has flown by since the UN Ocean Conference, and looking back on all the amazing memories we made is reminding us to hold onto the hope we felt. Here are some of our highlights: 🌟A conference to remember! We came away feeling inspired, energised and empowered (and a little tired!) - it’s definitely earned its place at the top of our list. 🐬 Incredible speakers and attendees. The lineup was fantastic, and we had the chance to meet so many dedicated ocean advocates. The connections made were truly valuable. A special mention of @dr.sylviaearle of @mission_blue, Uncle Sol, @callieveelenturf of @LeatherbackProject and @rightsForNature , @zandithemermaid of @theblackmermaid_foundation, @Xiyebeara of @reearthinitiative, @isabelledives of @kaiainitiative, @carlosmallomolina of @innoceana, @captainpaulwatson, @bodhi_patil, the @chilliapp team, @chameleon.xyz and many more! 🌊 Ocean love overload! Being surrounded by people who share our passion for ocean conservation was both humbling and motivating. 🎤 @Vic_duthil delivered brilliantly on her first panel! A fantastic debut - we’re so proud of this milestone in her advocacy journey - sitting alongside inspiring ocean-lovers, @carlosmallomolina and @zandithemermaid. Thank you to @OceanUpRise, @OceanCultureLife and @DiversforClimate for this opportunity. 🐢 @celinaxchien spoke at Ocean House on the way both art and nature touch our souls, and why this makes art and creativity an essential tool for raising awareness about our environment. 📸Printing the first ever Aldabra postcards to share the Aldabra love far and wide! 🪼 Grateful to have attended alongside our @reservaylt family 🏖️ The beauty of the French Riviera! The Mediterranean sea views added even more magic to our experience. Looking forward to nurturing the connections and ideas made at this remarkable conference. - — As the dust settles in Seychelles after the elections, we’ve sprung into action to…. mobilise the international community and keep the pressure on the incoming government. The fight for Aldabra doesn’t end at the ballot box - we follow through. We exist to protect Aldabra, once and for all. That’s why we’re at the @iucn_congress demanding accountability and placing an international magnifying glass on what’s happening on Assomption. We’re here to make sure that the global conservation community follows in the footsteps of the Seychelles electorate, to demand transparency and stop destructive development now, and in the future. Thank you to @reservaylt for helping us submit this new and urgent motion, one of the only entirely youth-governed initiatives to do so, and our co-sponsors for standing with us. We couldn’t have done it without the leadership of Reserva Youth Council Member @pebble_ginger The elections may be over, but our work is not. - — Aldabra is one of the most biodiverse places on earth - and it has the designations to…. prove it. These include: @unesco World Heritage Site, RAMSAR wetland (@conventiononwetlands), @keybiodiversity area, Important Shark and Ray Area (@iucnshark) and Important Marine Mammal Area (imma_network). Protected areas are one of the most powerful tools we have for biodiversity. When we designate somewhere as protected, we’re saying: this place matters more than profit. It works. But somewhere along the way, ‘protected’ appears to have become a selling point rather than a boundary. A 6* hotel is under construction on Assomption Island - 11km² of land with no protection of its own, yet sitting at the heart of some of the most biodiverse and protected regions on earth. Just 27km from Aldabra Atoll, every major designation sits at its doorstep. And 27km, in ocean terms, is nothing. Currents connect them. Species move between them. What happens on Assomption does not stay on Assomption. This International Biodiversity Day, we’re calling on these organisations to do what their titles promise - and speak out. → Take action via the link in bio 🐠🐬🕷️🦩🦈🦋🦎🐚🪸🪼🐋🐢 #ProtectAldabra #ProtectAssomption #Seychelles
- — In May, we wrote to Not to complain. (1/7). In May, we wrote to @UNESCO. Not to complain. But to update them on the Assomption hotel development threatening to damage one of their own World Heritage Sites: Aldabra Atoll. We got no reply. What we did get - by mistake - was an email from the CEO of the institution mandated to protect Aldabra (@sif_seychelles): “UNESCO will not entertain them.” UNESCO’s own World Heritage Centre says “we must empower young people to protect” World Heritage. Apparently that only applies when it’s convenient. The @iucn_official - UNESCO’s own scientific adviser on World Heritage matters - has rated the hotel development threatening Aldabra a “high threat.” Seychellois and international scientists have raised concerns. Seychellois communities have spoken out. And still, the door is closed. This isn’t just about Aldabra. It’s about whether “protecting shared natural heritage” and “empowering youth” are genuine commitments - or just good PR. Tell UNESCO that’s not good enough. It’s about whether “protecting shared natural heritage” and “empowering youth” are genuine commitments - or just good PR. Tell UNESCO that’s not good enough. - — Why are people losing trust in UNESCO?. ? It could be because of this… UNESCO says “we are convinced that engaging young people in decisions that affect them is not just a matter of right, it’s a matter of principle”. Yet for nearly two years our efforts to inform them of the risks facing one of their own World Heritage sites, has been met with silence. The most we’ve heard is this, an - accidental - email from @sif_seychelles (@unesco’s local partner in Seychelles) saying “UNESCO will not entertain them”. What does that say about UNESCO? What is the point of the institution if they don’t actually help to protect the places they claim to care about? Scientists, conservationists, local citizens and youth advocates have repeatedly called for stronger action to protect this irreplaceable World Heritage Site. We’ve written, campaigned, gathered evidence and asked questions. Still, no meaningful engagement. David Attenborough called Aldabra Atoll “one of the world’s greatest surviving natural treasures”. We agree. Aldabra deserves better. World Heritage deserves better. UNESCO, your silence speaks volumes. Join us in saving Aldabra, before it’s too late. For everyone new here: for 2 years, @unesco has been silent in the face of the destruction of one of their World Heritage sites. (Have a look at our recent posts for more information!) We have been reaching out to them again and again, asking them to speak out, to take action, to do ANYTHING to support our efforts. This week, @unesco are meeting in Busan, South Korea for their annual World Heritage committee meeting, where they will discuss new sites to be added to the World Heritage list, and the status of their existing sites. We wrote to them asking to add Aldabra to their agenda. They refused. Their exact words “Aldabra Atoll….will not be part of the committee’s agenda.” They offered no explanation. ‼️ WHY? This week, we’re demanding better. Seychelles deserves it. 🇸🇨 TAKE ACTION: Let’s keep the pressure on with @chilli.app. 🌶️ Comment below and we’ll DM you a link to make a real difference. - — A UNESCO World Heritage site in under threat and this is the week we can demand that…. UNESCO speaks up 🔈‼️ Aldabra Atoll, a coral ecosystem in the outer islands of Seychelles, has been under severe threat for 2 years. A Qatari-funded @rosewoodhotels has been bulldozing neighbouring Assomption Island, and local and international scientists and conservationists have been sounding the alarm for YEARS. Since the very beginning, we have been contacting @unesco @unescoworldheritage to support our on-the-ground and global efforts. We’ve asked them to speak up in support, to take action, to do something…ANYTHING! But they’ve been completely silent about the inevitable destruction of one of their most precious sites, which homes 400 species found nowhere else in the world. This week, UNESCO is meeting in Busan, South Korea for their annual World Heritage committee meeting. We reached out asking for them to add Aldabra to their agenda. They refused. Make some noise. Help us DEMAND that @unesco take a public stance on this hotel development. They boast about their engagement with youth voices, about how destruction of world heritage is a CRIME and perpetrators should be held accountable. And yet here we are. WHY ⁉️ We have been reaching out to UNESCO for 2 years, asking them to speak out and protect one of their own World Heritage sites, Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles. In return, we have been met with silence and this recent email “Aldabra Atoll...will not be part of the Committee’s agenda”. No explanation offered. There are 400+ species found nowhere else in the world that are facing severe risks, risks that are getting graver with each passing day. Aldabra Atoll should be at the top of their priorities to discuss. Help us tell UNESCO that silence is betrayal and that Aldabra deserves better. We’ve written an open letter to UNESCO alongside a global coalition of concerned organisations. 🌍 This open letter follows 2 years of @unesco’s silence in the face of irreversible destruction to Assomption Island, only 27km from Aldabra Atoll, one of their very own World Heritage sites.‼️ The UNESCO World Heritage Committee have been meeting in Busan, Republic of Korea since the 20th of July to discuss the status of their existing World Heritage sites, and they refused to add Aldabra Atoll to the agenda, writing “Aldabra Atoll…will not be a part of the Commitee’s agenda” with no explanation. This is not good enough. Why is UNESCO refusing to take a public stance on the intentional destruction of World Heritage? Who does UNESCO truly serve? This open letter asks UNESCO to add Aldabra Atoll to their agenda, to inscribe it on their list of ‘World Heritage sites in danger’ and to call on the Seychelles government to immediately suspend construction. - — World Heritage Sites are recognized as the best the world has to offer.. @UNESCO World Heritage Sites are recognized as the best the world has to offer. Places like the Galápagos Islands and the Great Barrier Reef are chosen for their outstanding biodiversity and conservation value. It makes sense to protect them. So why is UNESCO seemingly unbothered by a luxury resort development threatening one of their sites, Aldabra Atoll? UNESCO itself calls Aldabra one of the most important habitats on Earth for studying evolution and ecology, prized for its remoteness and its history of staying untouched by humans. A resort now under construction on Assomption Island, just 27 km away, is threatening all of that. The Committee just wrapped its 48th session in Busan, adding six sites to the List of World Heritage in Danger. Aldabra wasn’t mentioned. We cosigned a letter with @FriendsOfAldabra urging UNESCO to investigate, but nothing came of it. Why? Pristine ecosystems like this are increasingly rare. Help us keep the pressure on to protect Aldabra, not sell it to the highest bidder — Link in bio.
