- — Full English version.. It wasn’t easy to speak up, but my community freed me to. You too can speak up & ask questions, #Seychellois this is your heritage. We must exercise our rights: Articles 22 (Freedom of expression) & 38 (Right to a safe #environment) & fundamental duty: (e) to protect, preserve & improve the environment. When I was home, I was asked a tough & valid question: “Is it worth fighting for #Seychelles' environment abroad when projects like those on #Assomption disregard rules & destroy our environment?" I did everything I could not to shed a tear. It’s the right question & one I have spent many sleepless nights over. As someone representing Seychelles, I cannot stay silent on such #environmentalinjustice. It's like fighting a fire abroad while my home burns. I must fight for both, but home comes first. If I didn’t, I would be hollow & not live up to what has been entrusted to me. Seeing others defend #Asssomption & understanding this development’s implications for #Aldabra & #Seychelles, reminds me of my duty. I owe much to #Aldabra & speaking truth to power. I hope my voice lends itself to the voiceless & those in government, & civil society who know there are serious issues here. People have spoken out. But speaking out has a price. Some face bans, others fear for their jobs. I fear there is intimidation & silencing taking place. Like many, I submitted my concerns to the @m_a_c_c_e on the Proposed Tourism Development on Assomption Island. Chief among my concerns was biosecurity whereby although there are procedures since 2015, I have not seen them implemented, this was a grave threat to Assomption & Aldabra. This & other aspects of the project, especially speed, well documented by @sbc.sc Gran Reportaz should make us all pause. But is this happening? I am not against development, we need it (it could even allow restoration). But we need good development, which benefits our people & heritage d. Bad development leaves people behind, creates problems, & erodes trust.

From feeling completely helpless in the face of a development bigger and more destructive than what my brain can comprehend to feeling an overwhelming amount of joy and gratefulness for the community that this fight has created. It breaks my heart to write that construction on Assomption is moving forward despite local outcry, despite 115 pages of scientific reasons why it shouldn’t and despite all of the wildlife that will suffer the consequences. - — Legendary turtle scientist Dr.. Jeanne Mortimer has been protecting sea turtles in Seychelles since the 1980s. In this powerful interview with @greenprophet_ , she shares why the 37 beachfront villas now being built on Assomption Island pose a catastrophic threat to nesting sea turtles. Some of the images of the development featured in this reel come from the hotel website (www.aldabraislands.com) and from Annex 5 of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project. This Annex, described as a “Landscape Environment Design Approach” by Grant Associates, a firm celebrated for “pioneering” landscape design, shows plans for villas built directly on critical nesting habitat. It’s shocking that this was ever approved - especially when other sea turtle hotspots, like Florida, Costa Rica or Australia, have strict guidelines to prevent exactly this kind of destruction. “The biggest issue is lighting,” says Dr. Mortimer, known locally as Madam Torti. “Turtles won’t nest if there’s light on the beach. When you’ve experienced her magic, you can’t help but fight to protect her. In this episode, @sey_saltylocs reflects on one of the quiet but serious challenges for remote ecosystems like Aldabra: the threat of invasive species. From the moment you leave Mahé, teams from @sif_seychelles check everything for any seeds, soil or plant matter to ensure nothing hitchhikes onto the atoll. Even a single seed or ant can upset a finely-balanced ecosystem. Aldabra has faced its own challenges from rats and cats introduced in the past, which have impacted native birds and other wildlife, and SIF continues to work on eradication and tight biosecurity to protect what remains. It’s interesting that Frances compares Aldabra to the Galápagos as both islands are biological treasures, shaped by their isolation and home to wildlife found nowhere else. Galápagos has also struggled with invasive plants, goats, cats, rats and other species that arrived with humans over the centuries, and the boom in local tourism and human footprint are a big pressure on its native flora and fauna. That contrast shows why biosecurity isn’t just a set of rules, but it’s a critical safeguard for Aldabra’s future. Assomption itself plays an important role as a protective space between the main inhabited islands and Aldabra, helping reduce the risk of new invasions into this living laboratory of evolution. A year later, in 1982, it was granted UNESCO World Heritage Status. Aldabra is much more than a backdrop for tourism. It’s a home to extraordinary life. But are you biosecurity approved? 🌿🐢✈️ In Episode 2, @sey_saltylocs takes us on the journey from Mahé to Aldabra, and explains why getting there is a multi-step process. 🛑 Biosecurity is the shield that protects Aldabra’s extraordinary ecosystem. Invasive species, be it a single papaya seed, a stray ant or a pathogen on a piece of clothing, could trigger a chain reaction that permanently damages one of the world’s last truly wild places. Invasive species don’t need much. They hide in the folds of your clothes, in your medication bag...in the intimate corners of your bag that you’d rather no one looked at. 😅🐜🌱🦠 This is why every person going to Assomption and/or Aldabra is thoroughly checked, through multiple inspections that require a large amount of time. For the team of ~20 on Aldabra, their single six-month food shipment to Aldabra takes a dedicated team of at least 8 people dedicating 3 days of work to inspect every single item. It has taken over 50 years of careful effort to protect Aldabra’s fragile ecosystem. While no system is perfect, these biosecurity measures exist for a reason - and together with Aldabra’s remoteness, they have helped protect this ecosystem. How could these standards be upheld for a luxury hotel in operation? Can we realistically inspect every food item, supply crate, linen bundle, strawberry, staff member and especially high-paying guests at this scale and remoteness? Aldabra Atoll has been named a ‘living laboratory’ - a 125,000 year old coral ecosystem home to 400+ species found nowhere else in the world. It’s a scientific marvel and has thrived crucially because of its remoteness from human interference. And yet only 27km away, construction is underway on a Qatari-funded, $10,000 a night hotel - being advertised as a “gateway to Aldabra”: a “gateway” to an atoll that up until now has been visited predominantly by scientists and conservationists. Island communities are facing extreme development threats, with very little say in stopping it. These are international hotel investors, so it’s the international community’s responsibility to step up and help Seychellois people.
