Smallwood, a Birrigubba and Kalkadoon nurse and academic, had campaigned on Aboriginal health for four decades by that point. The convention drew delegates from thirteen regional dialogues held across the country.

The High Court rejected terra nullius as applicable to Australia on 3 June 1992, six to one. Eddie Koiki Mabo had died in February 1992, months before judgment. - - Old Parliament House in Canberra. The provisional Parliament House on King George Terrace, photographed in January 2026, seat of the federal parliament from 1927 to 1988. The Aboriginal Tent Embassy has stood on the lawn in front of this building since 26 January 1972. The building now houses the Museum of Australian Democracy.
- - Museum of Australian Democracy lettering. Lettering on a brick pillar outside the old provisional Parliament House in Canberra, marking the museum that now occupies it. The building holds the chambers where policies of child removal were debated for six decades. It reopened as a museum of democracy in 2009, the year after the National Apology was delivered in the newer building up the hill.

A memorial plaque in Rymill Park in Adelaide, photographed on 16 July 2026, marking a place set aside for reflection on the removal of Aboriginal children from their families. South Australia operated removals under the Aborigines Act and its successors well into the twentieth century. Memorials of this kind multiplied after the Bringing Them Home report of 1997.
