- - Daimler Motorised Carriage. Late 1886. Gottlieb Daimler + Wilhelm Maybach fit a high-speed engine to a converted stagecoach. First four-wheeled gasoline car. The Daimler-Benz merger 40 years later would create Mercedes-Benz.
- - Benz Patent-Motorwagen. January 29, 1886. Carl Benz patents the three-wheeler with a 954cc single-cylinder engine. Universally recognised as the first automobile. Patent DRP 37435. Top speed 16 km/h.
- - Peugeot Type 1. 1889. Peugeot, a steel + bicycle company since 1810, builds the Serpollet steam tricycle Type 1. By 1891: gasoline Type 3. Oldest continuously-operating carmaker.

- - Emil Jellinek + the Mercedes Name. 1900. Émile Jellinek orders 36 Daimler racing cars on condition they're named after his daughter Mercedes. Within a decade "Mercedes" = the brand. The first known case of customer-named global automotive brand.
- - Mercedes 35 HP - Modern Car Template. 1901. Wilhelm Maybach designs the Mercedes 35 HP for Daimler. Front-mounted in-line engine, honeycomb radiator, gated gearbox, pressed-steel chassis. Considered the first "modern" car; defines the template for the next 50 years.
- - Cadillac Founded. August 22, 1902. Henry Leland founds Cadillac in Detroit on the ashes of Henry Ford's second failed company. Becomes American luxury benchmark; first interchangeable-parts car (Dewar Trophy 1908).

- - Duesenberg Founded. 1913. Fred + August Duesenberg build the first American DOHC straight-8. The Model J (1928) is the most powerful + expensive American car of its era. Spawns the slang "it's a duesy."
- - Ford's $5 Workday. January 5, 1914. Ford doubles minimum wage to $5/day to reduce turnover + create customers for his cars. Press calls it "an act of social justice or shrewd business", both true. Defines 20th-century mass-consumer template.
- - Maserati Founded (Bologna). December 1, 1914. The five Maserati brothers found Officine Alfieri Maserati in Bologna. Trident logo from Bologna's Neptune Fountain. Wins Indy 500 (1939, 1940) with Wilbur Shaw.
- - Chrysler Founded. June 6, 1925. Walter Chrysler founds Chrysler Corporation. Acquires Dodge (1928). The "Detroit Three" lock-in (Ford + GM + Chrysler) shapes US auto for the next 80 years.
- - Detroit Becomes the Car Capital. 1920s. Detroit's population doubles (993K → 1.6M). Ford, GM, Chrysler all HQ'd there. By 1925: Michigan produces 80% of the world's cars. Single-industry-city template + eventual cautionary tale.
- - Enzo Ferrari. 1898-1988. Founded Scuderia Ferrari (1929) as Alfa Romeo racing arm, then Ferrari (1947). Single-minded obsession with racing; road cars existed to fund it. The greatest motorsport figurehead.
- - Ferdinand Porsche. 1875-1951. Designed VW Beetle + Mercedes SSK + Auto Union GP cars + Porsche 356. Founded Porsche engineering office (1931); his son Ferry built the 356 (1948). Single most-prolific 20th-century automotive engineer.
- - Ferrari Founded (125 S). March 12, 1947. Enzo Ferrari debuts the 125 S, first car bearing his own name (he'd previously built Alfa-Romeo racers). 1.5L V12. Ferrari road cars exist primarily to fund the racing programme, and they always will.
- - Soichiro Honda. 1906-1991. Founded Honda Motor Company (1948). Bike-engine workshop becomes the world's largest motorcycle + then car manufacturer. F1 from 1964; six-time engine champion.
- - Colin Chapman (Lotus). 1928-1982. Founded Lotus (1952). "Simplify, then add lightness." Pioneered monocoque chassis (1962), ground effect (1977), active suspension. Lotus wins 7 F1 constructors'. Sudden death (1982) just before DeLorean scandal broke.
