2021–present. Christie's, Sotheby's, institutional legitimation, market collapse, and the question of what survives. From 2021 forward the question stopped being whether NFTs would matter and started being which parts of the moment would survive into the institutional record. Christie's launched Christie's 3.0 in 2022 as a dedicated NFT auction platform; the Centre Pompidou acquired eighteen NFTs in 2023; the Buffalo AKG, the Whitney, MoMA, and the Smithsonian each developed positions on digital-art preservation. The 2022–2023 market correction wiped out the speculative tier and revealed which works the institutional collectors had quietly been holding. Vera Molnár, ninety-eight, released Themes and Variations through Sotheby's a year before her death — the first-generation pioneer entering the new economy on her own terms. The Serpentine formalized its Arts Technologies program; Hito Steyerl issued the most sustained critique. The question every traditional contemporary-art institution had been deferring — whether digital practice belongs alongside painting and sculpture in the permanent collection — got answered, in small ways, repeatedly. Consolidation is not over. But the period in which the question could be ignored is.

Her 2015 solo exhibition at the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas — the institution that holds the joint Bangert archive — presented new work from the period after Charles's death, in which Colette had begun running the FORTRAN programs the two had written together, on the same CalComp plotter, alone in the studio they had shared for four decades. What the 2015 show argued, implicitly, is that the joint practice had never actually been joint in the way that the surface collaboration suggested. Colette had been the visual sensibility throughout; Charles had been the implementation partner. When Charles died, Colette could still run the system — the programs worked, the plotter worked, the FORTRAN interpreter on the machine they had maintained for decades worked — and the resulting plotter drawings from 2009–15 are recognizably in the Bangert vocabulary but carry a specific emotional weight that the earlier joint work did not. The hand-mixed inks are slightly different. The paper choices slightly shifted. The Bangert style is present, but inflected by solitude in ways that the 2015 curator Kate Meyer found specifically moving. The show travelled modestly — to a few university-art-museum venues through 2016 — and Colette's subsequent work has continued at a deliberately slow pace. She is in her late nineties now and still producing, though at a reduced tempo. The 2015 solo show is in this archive as the specific case of a pioneer-generation American computer artist whose career has lasted long enough that she is now producing work in the 2020s that is genealogically continuous with work from 1967. Colette's story is, in many ways, the counterfactual for the period's other American algorithmic-plotter artists: she has continued, while most of her generation has stopped. The continuity is the argument. Lore Colette maintained the CalComp plotter in her and Charles's home studio in Lawrence, Kansas through most of the 2000s and 2010s; the plotter is genuinely the same physical machine the couple purchased in the early 1970s, periodically repaired with salvage-yard components. The 2015 exhibition's installation included the plotter itself as a sculptural object beside Colette's new plotter drawings, so visitors could see the specific instrument that had produced the work. The Spencer Museum has since acquired the plotter as a collection object with the explicit agreement that it will remain functional for as long as that is technically feasible. Colette's daily practice — a studio visit most mornings, a small plotter run of perhaps an hour, a few new drawings per week — has continued essentially unchanged for over fifty years. The project was called Everydays. By early 2021 he had produced five thousand consecutive daily works — nearly fourteen years of uninterrupted daily discipline, which is, as a discipline, remarkable regardless of one's feelings about the work that discipline produced. On March 11, 2021, Christie's auctioned Everydays: The First 5000 Days — a composite JPEG of all five thousand works, tokenized as a single NFT. The sale closed at $69.3 million, a price that made Winkelmann, overnight, the third-most-expensive living artist at auction by work ever sold, behind Jeff Koons and David Hockney. The buyer was Vignesh Sundaresan, publishing under the alias MetaKovan. The payment was 42,329 ETH. It was the first time Christie's, a 255-year-old institution, had accepted cryptocurrency. The art-historical significance of the sale is not primarily about the work. The work is a composite of five thousand daily images of uneven quality; it is difficult to argue for its aesthetic value except at the scale of the project — the sheer accumulated discipline, the commitment, the thirteen and a half years of daily production without a gap. What the sale's art-historical significance is about is institutional realignment. Nearly every major auction house, museum, and gallery in the world took meetings about NFTs in the weeks following the sale. Many of those meetings produced strategies that are still in force in 2026. The NFT as an asset class ceased to be a niche concern for a crypto subculture and became, in a single week, a core concern for the global art market. The market that followed this event has contracted severely. The 2022–24 crypto winter reduced most NFT secondary markets to a fraction of their 2021 peaks. Beeple's own market has held up better than most. What has not reverted, and will not revert, is the institutional legitimacy the Christie's sale conferred on the form. That legitimacy is the thing this archive is cataloging. Whether it has aged well, or will age well, is a question the archive is not here to settle. Winkelmann is still producing Everydays. The accumulation continues. Lore Winkelmann had made one artwork every single day since May 1, 2007 — 5,000 consecutive days without missing one. He called the project 'Everydays.' On March 11, 2021, Christie's auctioned a single NFT containing all 5,000 images as a composite mosaic. It sold for $69.3M to Vignesh Sundaresan ('MetaKovan'), making Winkelmann — overnight — the third-most-expensive living artist at auction behind Jeff Koons and David Hockney. The specific mechanic: collectors could buy mass during a 48-hour window. Each collector's total mass was represented as a single NFT per wallet; if a collector bought mass multiple times, the masses combined into one larger NFT. The more mass a collector had, the larger their NFT appeared. The mechanic made the collectors themselves part of the artwork's structure. Each collector's final piece was unique to their purchasing behavior; the total set of 28,983 collector-tokens formed a single work whose overall shape depended on how each individual had played the mechanic. This is a formally interesting gesture — a piece whose composition is determined by the market dynamics of its own sale — and it is one of the most conceptually rigorous NFT releases ever made. Reactions split predictably. NFT critics argued that The Merge was financially speculative and aesthetically thin. Defenders argued that its mechanic-as-medium represented a genuine formal innovation that digital art had not previously achieved. Both arguments have merit. The historical significance of the sale is unambiguous: $91.8 million at the peak of the 2021 market was, and remains, a record. Pak's The Merge stands at the exact peak of the NFT boom. This normalization — NFTs as one more category within Sotheby's contemporary-art operation — is the consolidation the era is named for. Lore Michael Bouhanna and Max Moore co-organized the Natively Digital sale at Sotheby's in June 2021 — the auction house's first dedicated NFT-only auction. HUMAN ONE is Winkelmann's institutional response to the question raised by his March 2021 Christie's sale: what does the Beeple practice look like if it is to continue as serious artistic work rather than remain a one-time speculative event? The answer, on the evidence of HUMAN ONE, is physical-digital hybrid objects with long-duration commitments from the artist. The work is still being updated; Winkelmann has posted videos of new content entering the HUMAN ONE walk several times since 2021. The $28.9 million sale price was, at the time, the second-highest price for a Winkelmann work, behind Everydays: The First 5000 Days. The critique has proven historically substantial. The 2022-24 NFT market correction has substantially validated several of Steyerl's specific arguments; the promised sustainable-income-for-artists that the 2021 NFT boom rhetoric had claimed has largely not materialized, and the market's primary beneficiaries have been the platform operators and early speculative collectors rather than the broader artist population. Steyerl has continued to produce video-essay work through 2023-25. Her public opposition to NFT markets has been sustained and has shaped substantial portions of the contemporary-art-establishment's institutional-skeptical stance toward the medium. Lore Steyerl's critique has not been universally endorsed within the digital-art community; several substantial counter-arguments (from Marisol Escobar, Brian Droitcour, and others) have pushed back on specific aspects of her analysis. The counter-arguments have generally been that Steyerl's framing is too categorical and that specific sub-segments of the NFT economy (the Tezos-based low-transaction-cost community, the fully-on-chain generative-art scene, the Feral File curatorial model) have supported artists in ways her general critique does not fully register. The Quantum collection, titled Math Art (1980–1995) after the dates of the original Apple II works, comprised a hundred pieces. The releases were among the first by a first-generation computer artist still alive to authorize them — Vera Molnár, Manfred Mohr, and Frieder Nake followed in subsequent years, but Franke was earliest and oldest. The drops mattered for two reasons. The first was financial. Franke had never received institutional pricing comparable to his contemporary visual-artist peers; for seventy years his oscillograms, plotter prints, and Apple II works had circulated at academic and small-collector prices. The NFT sales transferred meaningful value to him and to Susanne Päch — his wife and publishing partner — in his final year. The second reason was archival. Each Quantum piece was paired with high-resolution scans of the original work, dating notes, and provenance documentation establishing the chain of authorship from substrate to file. The release functioned as the first systematic public catalogue of work that had previously circulated only as small-edition prints in private hands. Franke died on July 16, 2022, in Egling, at the age of ninety-five. The retrospective attention that arrived in the years following — the 2024 Generative Art Summit at Akademie der Künste Berlin organized in part by his foundation, the EXPANDED.ART estate program, the institutional acquisitions — caught the work he had been making for seven decades, and it caught his estate, but it did not catch him. The Quantum release also closed a circle. Franke had begun in 1954 with oscillograph photographs of cathode-ray traces — an image generated by a system, captured by a photochemical substrate, signed by a hand. He ended in 2022 with the Math Art series, generated on an Apple II in 1982, captured now by a cryptographic substrate, signed by the same hand. Lore Kate Vass had been corresponding with Franke since the late 2010s, when she was researching first-generation computer art for her Zurich gallery program. In November 2022 the cryptocurrency exchange FTX — founded by Sam Bankman-Fried and valued at $32 billion earlier that year — collapsed in a matter of days, filing for bankruptcy on November 11 after a run on customer deposits revealed that the exchange had been commingling customer funds with its trading arm, Alameda Research.
