  7. Communiversity, Suicide Club, and Cacophony Society at San Francisco Public Library. John Law, Carrie Galbraith and Peter Field share pictures and stories of street pranks and urban exploration. The Suicide Club began in 1977 in San Francisco's Sunset neighborhood. Members climbed the Golden Gate Bridge, rode cable cars naked, and "liberated" billboards from their commercial messages. Around 1986, the SF Cacophony Society began new pranks such as SantaCon, Urban Iditarod, and the initial "Zone Trip" to Black Rock to burn an effigy of a man. John and Carrie also explain how the free Communiversity of the early 1970s was the transition from the hippie era to their later punk pranks. This exhibition explores the remarkable story of how the legendary Nevada gathering known as Burning Man evolved through collaborative ritual from humble countercultural roots on San Francisco’s Baker Beach into the world-famous desert convergence it is today. This exhibition is organized by the Nevada Museum of Art and will be on view through January 7, 2018. "City of Dust" will travel to the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum in spring 2018: http://bit.ly/CityofDust Many of the items included are drawn from the archive collections of the Center for Art + Environment at the Nevada Museum of Art. #CityofDustArchive
  10. Encountering Burning Man (full documentary) - True Story Documentary Channel. A young anthropologist and a trio of fire artists head to Black Rock Desert in Nevada where more than 60,000 people gather every year to experience Burning Man. This festival is a peculiar one, where strange talents and bartering take the place of monetary exchange, and where creation, art and performance are omnipresent. When the event comes to a close, the city disappears without a trace.

  15. The Reality Of Burning Man. A lot of people think Burning Man is just a massive party in the desert or some utopian social experiment, but it’s so much more than that. I hope this video offers a little bit of a different perspective on Burning Man and what Black Rock City is all about, beyond the partying, the tough conditions, and the way the media covers it all. This year, I followed the story of one art piece on the playa created by Eli Rogers, the man who locked himself in a jail cell for the week. In this video, we get to hear from Eli about why he chose to do this, and we witness the moment he was freed from jail, after the man burned.
