3. 1922-02-17 - Nosferatu. F. W. Murnau. Unauthorised Dracula adaptation; Stoker's widow sued and won an order to burn every print. The negatives that survived gave horror cinema its first immortal monster.

6. 1960-08-17 - Psycho. Alfred Hitchcock. Killed the lead character at the 47-minute mark. The shower scene was edited from 78 shots in 45 seconds. Birthed the modern horror film and traumatised an audience that had never seen a shower without Janet Leigh hidden behind it.
