Kilroy, riveter inspector at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts, writes KILROY WAS HERE in yellow crayon on the hulls of completed ship sections, partly as a tracking signature so management knows the work is checked. The sections ship out across the Atlantic; the phrase travels with them. American soldiers find KILROY WAS HERE already scrawled inside tanks, on the walls of bombed-out bunkers, on the underside of bridges they thought they'd captured for the first time. Other origin candidates exist (a Sergeant Francis Kilroy of the Air Transport Command; British Mr Chad; Australian Foo Was Here). The James Kilroy attribution wins because the American Transit Association awarded him the credit in 1946. 02. The First Webcam Becomes A Pilgrimage By 1995 the coffee pot is one of the most-visited URLs on Earth. Strangers from every continent load cl.cam.ac.uk/coffee/coffee.html to check the level of a coffee pot in a building they will never enter. Krups eventually replaces the pot with a sponsored model. The first spot, Wake-Up, opens with a sleeping office worker rolling over to find the King silently lying next to him in bed, holding a breakfast sandwich. There is no jingle, no slogan. The King says nothing. He just hands you a sandwich. Then he is in your gym, your shower, your office cubicle. 02. The Mascot Becomes a Photoshop Within months SA, YTMND, and proto-/b/ are Photoshopping the King into horror movie stills, classical paintings, family photographs. The mask travels because it is already a meme template: a single rigid expression on a human body in any context. The Burger King is the first major brand mascot whose 2000s revival is calibrated to be screenshotted, not to be liked. Suit, Afro, Block the Ladder On 12 July 2006 hundreds of /b/ users create identical Habbo Hotel avatars: dark suit, large afro, dark skin. They flood the hotel's swimming pool, line up in a wall blocking the entry ladders, and announce POOL'S CLOSED DUE TO AIDS. The raid is coordinated entirely on /b/ threads. Habbo Hotel is a children's virtual world; the raid exploits the platform's lack of moderation tools. The aesthetic (the identical avatars, the wall formation, the catchphrase) is meticulously planned. 02. The First Coordinated Image-Board Raid Form POOL'S CLOSED is the first time /b/ executes a coordinated multi-user identity-spoofing raid on a third-party platform with a memorable visual. The format gets repeated against Habbo for years and becomes the prototype for every subsequent Anonymous operation, from Project Chanology (January 2008) to the larger Operation Payback (2010). Allebach uses the platform to thank teachers, push voter registration, and discuss his own anxiety. How Long Do Emos Live, also identifiable as How Long Do Idiots Live or How Long Do Rats Live, among other variations of the phrasal template, How Long Do X Live, refers to a trend on TikTok where users display a Google search regarding a group of people's lifespan, most being 12-15 years. If the user has searched, "How long do Emos live," for instance, they then message their emo friend the phrase, "I will never forget you," in accordance with the most prominent audio used in the trend. Although traces of the screenshot and trend date back to mid-2021, it didn't take off en masse until early 2022.

In the video, they're captured in the midst of imagination, often moving in mock slow-mo to song remixes. They are usually unaware that they're being filmed and mocked through a doorway. The concept started on TikTok in late 2022. One of the main subjects of the light-hearted ridicule was the Ohio Final Boss, also known as @Satoyu0704.

The trend started on X in March 2021 after a user posted a picture of American rapper Common and a photo of cents with the caption "Some of y'all lack [common sense]." The meme resurfaced in mid-April 2025, after an Ethel Cain fan uploaded an image of the singer paired with a photo of French fries. The meme gained traction as a Stan Twitter catchphrase, having a similar usage as the Onika Burger meme, working mostly about the funny and semi-nonsensical nature of the original tweet.

What Kind of X is This? refers to a series of TikTok videos in which a male, AI-generated voice asks a question, using the aforementioned phrasal template, about identifying the breed or species of an animal or plant. A second voice responds and identifies it, using the phrasal template, "This is a X." Popular iterations include "What Kind of Awesome is This?" "What Kind of Fruit is This?" and "What Kind of Monkey is This?" among others about pigs, cows and dogs. The videos were posted to TikTok in June 2025 by the account Popular science (@masochist09). The videos were based on and sometimes directly translated from videos posted on Chinese social media platforms like BiliBili. Other TikTokers began riffing on the format by either using the TikTok sounds or generating new versions, using the same AI voices and replacing the "X" in the snowclone with a noun of their choice. Some TikTokers engaging with the meme joked about being a part of TikTok's "niche community" in the comment sections and captions added to reposts.
2025-06-30 - Subway Slammer. The Subway Slammer, also known as Takeyuki Kiuchi, refers to a character in the 2025 Persona game Persona 5: The Phantom X (P5X), who's an antagonist known for slamming into women in the subway station. The Subway Slammer inspired many memes on social media platforms like Twitter / X, Reddit and TikTok, among others, following the game's release in late June 2025. His catchphrases like, "It wasn't on purpose. That's not my fault," and, "The whole subway's mine for the slammin'," were also used in memes. People online humorously hyped up the Subway Slammer as a powerful villain in fiction, including powerscaling memes.
2026-03-18 - Tung Tung God. "Tung Tung God" as a character from the Bible when asked, as well as a depiction of the Indonesian Brainrot character Tung Tung Tung Sahur as an angel or god with wings and a white body, holding a scepter instead of a baseball bat. The audio originates from a February 2026 video by YouTuber Blitzerz and went viral throughout March 2026, inspiring memes on sites like TikTok and X / Twitter.
