The Vessel The RMS Tayleur was a British iron-hulled clipper ship, commissioned at the Charles Tayleur and Company yard at Warrington on 4 October 1853. She was 68 metres long, 1,979 gross tons, and had been built for the White Star Line's Liverpool-to-Australia emigrant trade. Her construction incorporated what were, at the time, some of the most advanced shipbuilding innovations: a full iron hull (rather than the wooden hulls that still dominated the merchant marine), a centrally-mounted compass-binnacle system, and extensive iron-framed passenger accommodation for 660 emigrants below her main deck. The 1853 launching of the Tayleur had coincided with the peak of the Australian Gold Rush immigration cycle. The White Star Line, newly founded in 1845 and specialising in the Australia emigrant trade, had been accepting bookings for her maiden voyage since July 1853. Her passenger manifest for 1854 was full: 528 adult emigrants and 132 children, predominantly British and Irish working-class emigrants seeking the Australian goldfields. Her master on her maiden voyage was Captain John Noble, 44, a career mariner who had previously commanded the packet-ship Meridian on the transatlantic trade. Noble had not sailed an iron-hulled ship before; the Tayleur was his first command of the new iron-hulled class. The Disaster By the morning of 21 January 1854, Tayleur was approximately 140 kilometres southeast of Liverpool, having been at sea for 42 hours. Captain Noble's dead-reckoning position placed the ship in the open western Atlantic approaches; his actual position, due to the accumulated compass error, was substantially further east, approaching the west coast of Ireland. Weather had deteriorated into heavy rain, reducing visibility to less than one kilometre. At approximately 11:00 on 21 January 1854, the Tayleur struck a rocky outcrop at Lambay Island, 16 kilometres northeast of Dublin. The impact was substantial: her bow was crushed against the rock; her hull was holed below the waterline. The ship began to flood immediately and listed to starboard as her watertight subdivisions failed. The evacuation of the 731 aboard was catastrophically inadequate. The ship had been equipped with only four small lifeboats (total capacity approximately 80 people) for her 731 complement; three of the four lifeboats capsized during launching attempts in the heavy swell against Lambay Island's rocky shore. The one lifeboat that launched successfully carried 28 survivors to the island's beach. RMS Tayleur broke up against Lambay Island at approximately 13:00 on 21 January 1854 and sank in approximately 22 metres of water. Rammed by the French steamer SS Vesta in fog off the Grand Banks on 27 September 1854, she sank slowly over five hours. The crew seized the lifeboats first; not a single woman or child among the passengers survived, including Captain Luce's twelve-year-old son. The scandal ruined Collins Line within five years. The Vessel The SS Arctic was a paddle steamer of the American Collins Line, one of the four sister ships (with Atlantic, Baltic, and Pacific) built between 1850 and 1851 to compete with the Cunard Line for the transatlantic mail and passenger trade. She was 86 metres long, 2,856 tons, with a wooden hull and a pair of side-mounted paddle wheels driven by Oscillating Steam Engine Works of New York. She entered service on 27 October 1850 and won the transatlantic speed record from Pacific the following year with a 9-day 17-hour Liverpool-New York passage. The Collins Line, officially the United States Mail Steamship Company, was the first American transatlantic line to be competitive with the British Cunard service. It operated under a $858,000 annual U.S. Post Office mail contract and was the visible commitment of the American government to contesting British maritime supremacy on the Atlantic. The four Collins ships were the largest, fastest, and most luxuriously appointed American passenger ships of their generation. Arctic was widely considered the fleet flagship. Her master from 1851 was Captain James C. Luce, a 53-year-old Massachusetts mariner of forty years' deep-sea experience. Luce had commanded Arctic on her eastbound record voyage and was the most respected American ship's captain of his generation. The Disaster The rapid westbound movement increased the rate of water entering Arctic's hull. By 15:00 on 27 September 1854 she was taking on water faster than her pumps could expel it. Captain Luce gave the order to lower her six lifeboats and evacuate the passengers. What followed was the single most shameful episode in American maritime history before the Lusitania. The lifeboats were seized almost immediately by Arctic's crew. The engineers and stokers, who had been ordered to remain at their stations to keep the pumps running, left their positions and rushed for the boats. The firemen fought with the passengers. Captain Luce attempted to maintain order on the deck and, by several surviving accounts, personally ensured that at least two lifeboats were launched with passengers aboard; he could not control the general chaos. The crew's commandeering of the boats was the proximate cause of the disaster's particular shape. Of the 85 survivors eventually rescued, 61 were crew members and 24 were passengers. Not one of the 81 women and children among the passengers survived. Among the dead were Mrs Edward Collins, her daughter Mary Ann, her son Henry Collins, and the wife and two children of the company treasurer. Arctic sank at 17:00 on 27 September 1854. Captain Luce was one of the survivors; he had gone over the side as the ship went down and had been picked up by one of her boats. The Vessel The SS Central America was a 272-foot sidewheel steamer built at Webb and Allen's Brooklyn yard in 1852 for the United States Mail Steamship Company's Panama route service. She was 2,141 tons, carried 85 crew and 571 passengers at full capacity, and was one of the principal commercial connections between the California Gold Rush economy of San Francisco and the financial centre of New York. Her specific commercial role in the 1850s was the New York leg of the Gold Rush passenger and bullion trade. California prospectors and merchants travelling east with their accumulated gold boarded a Pacific Mail steamer at San Francisco, crossed the Isthmus of Panama by rail or by horse-drawn mule train, and embarked on a United States Mail vessel at Aspinwall (Colón, Panama) for the Atlantic leg north to New York. Central America was the largest ship on that Atlantic leg. Her cargo on her final voyage of September 1857 included approximately 425 passengers and 101 crew, and an exceptionally large gold shipment. The registered gold cargo of 13.5 tonnes of bullion, bars, and coin (valued at $1.6 million in 1857 dollars, approximately $60 million in modern equivalent) was one of the largest California gold shipments ever loaded on a single Atlantic-leg steamer. The unregistered gold carried in passenger luggage and personal possessions was estimated at another $1 million to $2 million. The combined value of her cargo at current gold prices was approximately $300 million. The Disaster At 20:00 on 12 September 1857 the Central America rolled onto her beam ends and sank in approximately 2,200 metres of water, 300 kilometres east of Charleston. Captain Herndon, in the custom of the American merchant marine of the period, refused to leave his ship; he went down on her bridge in uniform. 425 of her 578 aboard drowned. 153 were saved by the Marine, or, in nine cases, by the passing Norwegian bark Ellen which reached the scene on the afternoon of 13 September and pulled nine men from floating wreckage. The news of the loss reached New York on 19 September 1857, carried by the surviving officers via the Marine's arrival at Norfolk. The immediate economic consequence was severe and widely felt. Her gold cargo, which would have been delivered to New York banks on the expected arrival date of 15 September, was lost at a moment when the New York financial markets were already under severe strain from the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Company failure of August 1857. The Central America's loss converted a developing credit crisis into a full-scale financial panic: the New York banks suspended specie payments on 13 October 1857, triggering the Panic of 1857, the worst American financial crisis of the antebellum period. The Vessel The SS Austria was a Hamburg-America Line passenger steamship, commissioned at the Caird and Company yard at Greenock, Scotland, on 5 March 1857. She was 97 metres long, 2,384 gross tons, and was one of the first Hamburg-America Line steamers designed specifically for the Hamburg-to-New-York immigrant trade. Her engines were British-built twin-cylinder steam reciprocating engines of the mid-1850s standard design, driving a single screw propeller at a service speed of 10.5 knots. The Hamburg-America Line (Hamburg Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft, HAPAG) had been established in 1847 specifically for the emigrant trade between Hamburg and New York. By 1858 the line had expanded to operate four similar ships (Hammonia, Borussia, Saxonia, Austria), which together represented the principal German emigrant transportation channel for the mid-1850s. The Hamburg-America Line's specific commercial strength was its ability to service the German-speaking Mitteleuropa (Bavaria, Württemberg, Austria, Bohemia) that had been producing substantial emigration to the United States since 1848. Her master on her final voyage was Captain Friedrich Heydtmann, 49, a career Hamburg-America Line officer. The Disaster The fire in SS Austria's forecastle spread rapidly through the ship's wooden-lined interior compartments. The specific vulnerability of mid-nineteenth-century passenger steamships to interior fires was well-known but had not been successfully addressed at the operational level: the combination of wooden hull, wooden interior lining, cotton upholstery, oil lamps, and open coal stoves in the galleys and cabins produced a fire risk that no contemporary fire-suppression system could adequately counter. The crew response to the SS Austria fire was, by contemporary standards, adequate in intention but catastrophically inadequate in execution. Captain Heydtmann ordered the ship's fire bucket brigade to attack the forecastle fire; the attack failed. By 12:30 on 13 September 1858 the fire had reached the main cabin areas; by 13:00 the fire had reached the engine room and had destroyed the ship's steam power. The specific failure of the evacuation reflected the contemporary inadequacy of passenger-ship life-saving equipment. The SS Austria carried four small wooden lifeboats (total capacity approximately 100 people) for her 538 aboard. The Vessel The SS Lady Elgin was a Great Lakes paddle steamer of the Gurdon S. Hubbard Line, commissioned at the Bidwell and Banta yard at Buffalo, New York, in 1851. She was 74 metres long, 1,039 gross tons, with side-wheel paddle propulsion driven by twin beam engines. She was designed specifically for the Chicago-Superior-Buffalo Great Lakes passenger and cargo trade, one of the principal commercial transportation axes of the pre-railroad Upper Midwest. Her commercial role through the 1850s had been the carriage of passengers, mail, and commercial cargo between Chicago, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Mackinac Island, Sault Ste. Marie, and Buffalo. The Great Lakes steamer trade of the 1850s was one of the most competitive commercial sectors in the United States: approximately 150 passenger steamers were operating across the lakes at any time, competing intensely for the passenger and mail contracts that represented the principal revenue sources of the trade. Her master in September 1860 was Captain Jack Wilson, 35, a career Great Lakes mariner. The Disaster The Augusta's reinforced oak bow penetrated Lady Elgin's port paddle-wheel housing and the paddle-wheel shaft structure behind it. The damage was substantial: Lady Elgin's port paddle was destroyed; her port hull structure between the paddle and the main cargo deck was breached; her boiler room was flooded within five minutes of the collision. The Augusta, believing her own ship to be more seriously damaged than the Lady Elgin (her bow had been crushed by the impact), proceeded immediately to Chicago for emergency repairs without rendering assistance to the sinking steamer. The Augusta's specific decision to continue to Chicago rather than to stand by and rescue survivors has been the subject of continuing historical criticism. Lady Elgin listed heavily to port and began to settle within 10 minutes of the collision. Captain Wilson ordered abandon-ship at approximately 02:45 on 8 September 1860. The ship's lifeboats were inadequate for her 555 complement (she carried only two small yawls with total capacity of approximately 30 people), and the evacuation proceeded chaotically as passengers attempted to use furniture, cargo doors, and pieces of the ship's superstructure as flotation devices. On the night of 17 February 1864 off Charleston, she became the first submarine in history to sink an enemy warship, putting her torpedo into the Union sloop USS Housatonic. She never returned. Recovered in 2000 and conserved for twenty years; analysis suggests the crew were stunned unconscious by the shock of their own torpedo transmitted through the water and drowned at their stations. The Vessel The H. L. Hunley was a Confederate States Navy submarine built in Mobile, Alabama, in 1863 under the private direction of the engineer Horace Lawson Hunley, from whom she took her name. She was 12 metres long, roughly 1.2 metres in diameter, constructed from a cut-down cylindrical boiler with pointed ends riveted on, and was propelled by eight men turning a hand crank that drove a single three-bladed propeller. She displaced approximately 7.5 tonnes submerged and carried a crew of eight: seven crankmen and a commander who steered and managed the dive planes. She was the third submersible Horace Hunley had built. The first, the Pioneer, had been tested at New Orleans in 1862 and scuttled when the city fell to Union forces. The second, the American Diver, had been lost in Mobile Bay in early 1863 during a test that confirmed she was underpowered. The Hunley was the improved version, with the eight-man hand crank replacing the earlier four-man design, built to attack the Union blockade of Charleston, South Carolina. Her weapon was a "spar torpedo": a 4.5-metre wooden pole extending from her bow, tipped with a 41-kilogram copper canister containing black powder. The attack method required the submarine to approach its target below the surface, ram the spar into the target's hull below the waterline, back off, and detonate the charge by a lanyard as the submarine withdrew. The method was crude, dangerous, and unprecedented in naval warfare. The Disaster The Hunley approached the Housatonic from the southwest at perhaps 3 knots, awash or nearly so to present minimal silhouette. She was sighted by the Union watch officer, Acting Master John Crosby, at approximately 20:45 at a distance of 90 metres. Crosby rang the alarm bell, ordered the anchor chain slipped, and directed musketry at the approaching object. Rifles fired, revolvers fired. None of the small-arms fire penetrated the Hunley's iron hull. At approximately 20:45:30 the spar torpedo made contact with the Housatonic's starboard quarter, just forward of her mizzen mast. The detonation of the 41-kilogram black-powder charge opened an 3-metre hole in her hull below the waterline. The explosion lifted the Housatonic bodily; she settled back into the water and began to flood rapidly. She sank in 9 metres, her masts still projecting above the surface, at approximately 20:52. Five of her 160-man crew died. The Hunley never returned to Breach Inlet. Dixon and his crew were sighted signalling toward Sullivan's Island from a short distance southeast of the Housatonic sinking at approximately 21:00 on 17 February; they were never seen again. The Hunley was officially lost. The Confederate naval command classified her missing and investigated for decades without locating the wreck. She was the first submarine in human history to sink an enemy warship in combat, and she had not come home from the attack.

The Vessel The SS Sultana was a Mississippi River sidewheel steamboat, 79 metres long, 1,719 tons gross, built in Cincinnati in 1863 by the John Litherbury yard and owned by a syndicate of St Louis merchants. She was classified as a cabin steamer of the second class, with first-class accommodations on her upper decks, a capacity of perhaps 380 passengers and crew, and a boiler installation consisting of four tubular high-pressure boilers on her lower deck. Her commercial role in 1864-65 was the cotton and general-freight trade between New Orleans and St Louis, with scheduled stops at Memphis, Vicksburg, and Cairo. She was one of some 200 commercial steamers working the Lower Mississippi during the Civil War years under the military transport system overseen by the United States Quartermaster Department, which requisitioned civilian steamers for troop movements at a per-head contract rate. In March 1865 one of her four boilers developed a bulging seam from overheating; the ship's engineer R. G. Taylor had her put into a repair yard at Vicksburg for a proper rebuild, which would have taken three weeks. Her master, Captain J. Cass Mason, under commercial pressure to maintain his schedule, accepted a patch repair of the single boiler: a rivet-mounted steel plate over the weakened seam. The repair took 24 hours. The boiler inspector who certified the patch was under contract from the owners. The Disaster At 02:00 on 27 April 1865, three of her four boilers exploded almost simultaneously. The inquiry afterward determined that the starboard middle boiler, the same one that had been patched in Vicksburg, was the point of initial failure; the shock of its rupture propagated through the adjacent boilers in the same brick setting within milliseconds. The explosion destroyed the centre of the ship and collapsed the three upper decks into the firebox. The Sultana's wooden superstructure caught fire from the exposed coals immediately. The ship had no lifeboats that could serve her actual passenger load; she carried a skiff and a yawl sufficient for perhaps 80 people. The Mississippi current at that season was running at 6 knots in flood, and the water temperature was 12 degrees Celsius. POWs too weak to swim from Andersonville died in minutes in the current. Those who could swim were pulled under by those who could not. The burning hulk drifted downstream for four kilometres before grounding against a wooded bank near the mouth of Second Chickasaw Bayou at 06:30. Rescue steamers from Memphis arrived within an hour of the first alarm. The Bostonia II pulled 100 survivors out of the water on the way downstream. The Silver Spray, the Pocahontas, and the small gunboats Essex and Tyler worked the river bank through the morning. The two ships were on a collision bearing; the closing rate was approximately 35 kilometres per hour. Captain Sealby of Republic ordered full reverse to the engines and hard left rudder; Captain Angelo Ruspini of Florida similarly ordered emergency engine and rudder manoeuvres. Neither captain had sufficient reaction time to avoid the collision. At approximately 05:45 on 23 January 1909, SS Florida struck RMS Republic on the port quarter at approximately 4 knots relative impact speed. Florida's reinforced bow penetrated approximately 8 metres into Republic's hull, opening a breach approximately 12 metres long through Republic's port side amidships. The impact location was immediately below the first-class dining saloon; three passengers and three crew members were killed in the collision itself. The two ships separated after the collision. Florida was substantially damaged at her bow but was not in immediate sinking danger; her bow bulkhead had held, and her forward watertight compartments were flooding but containable. She was, at her commissioning in 1902, among the most powerful warships in the Royal Navy and a full representative of the final pre-dreadnought battleship generation. The subsequent appearance of HMS Dreadnought in 1906 rendered the Formidable class tactically obsolete (all-big-gun armament superseded the mixed-calibre broadside arrangement), but the 1902-vintage battleships remained in operational service through the early years of the First World War as secondary-line capital ships. By November 1914, Bulwark had been assigned to the 5th Battle Squadron of the Royal Navy's Home Fleet, based at Sheerness on the River Medway approaches to the Thames estuary. Her operational role was the second-line defence of the Thames estuary against potential German naval incursion. Her complement was 750 officers and ratings. Her master on 26 November 1914 was Captain Guy Lewis Sclater, 46, an experienced career officer. The ship was The Disaster At approximately 07:53 on 26 November 1914, HMS Bulwark exploded catastrophically at her moorings at Kethole Reach. The explosion was preceded, according to witnesses aboard nearby ships, by approximately three seconds of visible internal fire on the battleship's upper deck: smoke and flame issued from her 6-inch casemate positions and from her ventilation exhausts. The physical effects were documented by witnesses aboard the surrounding ships of the 5th Battle Squadron and by observers at Sheerness dockyard. The Vessel The RMS Empress of Ireland was a twin-screw steel-hulled passenger liner built by the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company at Govan, Glasgow, and launched on 27 January 1906 for the Canadian Pacific Railway's Atlantic service. She was 170 metres long, 14,191 tons, designed specifically for the Liverpool-Quebec route that CPR had been operating since 1903 as the British imperial link between the port of Liverpool and the settlers of western Canada. She and her sister Empress of Britain were the visible face of the CPR's "All Red Route" between Britain and its Pacific dominions: from the Liverpool docks by her, across the Atlantic and up the St Lawrence to Quebec, then by CPR transcontinental rail to Vancouver, then by the Pacific Empress liners Empress of Japan or Empress of China to Yokohama and Hong Kong. The CPR publicised the route as the fastest passage between London and Shanghai; the Empress of Ireland carried the imperial mail on the Atlantic leg of that journey. By 1914 she had completed 95 round trips on the Canadian run. She carried 1,057 passengers and 420 crew when she sailed, on average; her passenger list was almost evenly split between Canadian settlers returning west from visits to Britain and British emigrants moving west for the first time. Her master, Henry George Kendall, had just taken command from the previous captain and was on his first westbound voyage in her. The Disaster The injury was immediately fatal. The Storstad's bow tore open both boiler rooms and the starboard coaling bunkers at the turn of the bilge. The sea entered at a rate of hundreds of tons per second. Within four minutes the list to starboard had exceeded the angle at which her lifeboat davits could be worked. Most of the passengers were asleep; the ship had been running at night in normal trim, and the loudest sound heard on the starboard cabin decks was the roar of water entering through what had been, moments before, the lower portholes of the F-deck cabins. She sank in fourteen minutes, bow-first, in 40 metres of the St Lawrence. The sinking was fast enough that the wireless operator Ronald Ferguson had time to transmit a distress signal but not to receive any reply; the acknowledgement from the Pointe-au-Père station arrived as she was already on her side. The Storstad, damaged but afloat, launched her own boats and joined the rescue; the mail steamer Lady Evelyn and the pilot cutter Eureka reached the scene at around 03:00. 1,012 of the 1,477 aboard died. Of the 138 children in third class, only four survived. Of the 167 Salvation Army contingent, nine. The total passenger loss was 840, which is more than the 829 passengers who died on the Titanic two years earlier; the Empress's total casualty count was lower only because she had fewer crew aboard. 465 survived. Her watertight doors, open as they normally were in peacetime hospital operation for stretcher traffic, were only partially closed through a chain of command that took seven minutes to propagate. Her lower portholes, opened by nurses for ventilation in the warm Aegean morning, admitted water on her starboard side as her list developed. Within ten minutes the flooding had reached her watertight bulkheads above the waterline limit, the same failure mode her sister had suffered in 1912, and she began to settle by the bow. Captain Bartlett ordered the ship run aground on Kea and continued at 10 knots toward the island. The forward motion into the bow-down list accelerated the flooding. At 08:35 he ordered the engines stopped and the boats away; two port lifeboats were launched against orders as she was still under way and were caught by the turning propellers, killing 30 people. This was her entire death toll. She sank in 55 minutes, stern last, rolling onto her starboard side as she went. The Vessel The RMS Titanic was the second of three Olympic-class liners built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for the White Star Line, the largest ships in the world when she entered service in April 1912. She displaced 46,328 tons, was 269 metres long, and carried a beam of 28 metres; her nine-deck superstructure rose eighteen metres above the waterline. Triple screws driven by two reciprocating engines and a Parsons low-pressure turbine gave her a service speed of 21 knots with reserve for 24. Her subdivision into sixteen watertight compartments, controlled by electric doors from the bridge, was widely reported in the trade press as the reason she was "practically unsinkable". The phrase came not from her builders or owners but from the mass-market magazines that had covered her launch; it would be repeated against them for the rest of the century. Below the waterline the contact opened a series of intermittent gashes along the forward five compartments. Thomas Andrews, the ship's designer, made a quick tour of the forward holds with Captain Smith and returned white. He told the captain they had perhaps an hour and a half, possibly two.
