Repair

The service trade as objects and people: repairmen with valve caddies, tube testers, workshop benches, oscilloscopes, service manuals and schematics, a chassis pulled out onto the living room floor, and the modern restoration bench. For decades a television was a repairable appliance with an entire trade behind it, and that trade has an unusually strong presence on film today.

1951 - Vintage Hickok Military Tube Tester, Model TV-3B-U, Made In USA, Circa 1951. A Hickok military specification valve tester. Testers like this let a technician check each valve under load rather than by guesswork, and shops kept one on the bench because a dead valve was the most common fault.

1952 - Baird Coronation Fifteen (C1815) Television, 1952, back. rough-fitting of the new hardboard back. As I acquired the set the back was missing so a new one was cut from pegboard. Slots were made by hand-scoring with a tank cutter and stanley knife.
1955 - Vintage Superior Instruments Co. Trans-Conductance Vacuum Tube Tester, Model TV-12, Circa 1955. A Superior Instruments transconductance vacuum tube tester of about 1955. Transconductance testing measures how well a valve actually amplifies rather than merely whether it conducts, which catches a tube that is weak but not yet dead.

1958 - First TV Remote Control Demonstration | Zenith “Space Command” (1958). A period demonstration of the Zenith Space Command remote control. Zenith is also the company that was the last American television manufacturer by 1988, and the remote is the piece of its hardware history that everyone still touches.

1979 - Nordmende 592.120. A Nordmende circuit board carrying the ultrasonic amplifier, digital to analogue converter and memory for a colour television remote system, including the receiver and tuner control chips. Storing sixteen station presets in hardware was a selling point in 1979.

1979 - Nordmende Ultrasonic Remote Control Unit Assembly for Color TV Sets. A Nordmende Telecontrol ultrasonic remote control assembly for colour television sets, made in Bremen-Hemelingen in 1979. The unit is a full assembly of boards rather than a single chip, which is why remote control was still a premium feature.
1980 - 31ЛК3Б and deflection yoke. A Soviet 31LK3B monochrome picture tube of 12 inches with its deflection yoke fitted around the neck. The yoke is a pair of coil windings that bend the electron beam horizontally and vertically to sweep out the picture.

The shield is there because this stage generates strong signals that would otherwise interfere with the picture it is helping to draw.
1982 - Mini Star 416 - board 3 - box with 3 diodes and 2 capacitors-5350. This is the high voltage multiplier, which accelerated electron beam inside the cathode-ray tube. It is point-to-point wired and placed in its own enclosure with high-voltage terminals. Larger Soviet TVs used completely sealed multiplier assemblies, about the size of a soap bar each - too big for this small television.

2022 - Samsung UE40MU6409U - case opened-4621. A Samsung 40 inch LED backlit liquid crystal television with its case opened, exposing the boards and the panel assembly. Almost every function sits in a handful of sealed modules, which is why a modern panel is replaced rather than repaired.
