Tubes

Cathode ray tubes as objects and as components: bare tubes, cutaways, electron guns, shadow masks and aperture grilles, phosphor screens, leaded funnels, projection tubes, the flat tube in a pocket television, and the last enormous direct-view screens. Also the receiving valves that sat in a chassis, which is a narrower category than it sounds, since the wider vacuum tube world is mostly radar, X-rays and hi-fi.

Part of Television

149 moments in this segment.

  1. - Cathode Rays Figure 4. Figure 4 from Thomson's 1897 paper Cathode Rays. The apparatus measures how far a beam bends under a magnetic field, the same effect a deflection yoke later exploited to paint a picture. It is a published figure rather than a photograph.
  2. - JJ Thomson exp2. A diagram of Thomson's 1897 cathode ray experiment, showing the ray in blue being bent by an electric field in yellow. Deflecting a beam under electrical control is the single effect every picture tube depends on, so this experiment is the direct ancestor of the television screen.
  3. - Kombinierter Fernseh- und Rundfunkempfänger. A combined television and radio receiver made by Telefunken, photographed in 1933. Combining the two in one cabinet was normal at this date, because a household buying a television was buying its first one and already owned a radio worth matching.
  4. - 1930s VACUUM TUBE MANUFACTURING DOCUMENTARY (SILENT) WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. VALVES 17974. Silent 1930s footage of vacuum tube manufacturing at Western Electric. Pre-war tube making is almost entirely hand work, which is why the labour is so visible.
  5. - 1936 Marconi television Musée EDF Electropolis photo 1. A Marconi television of 1936, photographed at the Musée EDF Electropolis in Mulhouse, France. 1936 is the year Britain began its high definition service from Alexandra Palace, alternating Baird's mechanical system with Marconi-EMI's electronic one.
  6. - FE VI inBetrieb a. German mirror television made by AEG/Telefunken, from 1937. The cathode ray tube (CRT) which produces the image is in the cabinet and is viewed in the mirror, which can be folded down when the set is not in use. The correct model name mayTelefunken FE V (1936/37)[1].
  7. - FE VI inBetrieb b. A German Telefunken mirror television of 1937 in operation, showing the interval card of the Paul Nipkow television transmitter in Berlin. The phosphor looks beige-brown under room light but fluoresces bluish white when driven, which is why the working screen looks nothing like the dormant one.
  8. - RCA 1939 console television television. An RCA console television of about 1939, from the range launched around the New York World's Fair. Pre-war American production was small, only seven to eight thousand sets against roughly nineteen thousand in Britain, and the American market really begins in 1946.
  9. - AT&T Archives: A Modern Aladdin's Lamp, about vacuum tubes,1940. A Modern Aladdin Lamp, a 1940 Bell System film about vacuum tubes, from the AT&T archive. The thermionic valve is the component that made electronic television possible and the component that made early sets run hot enough to need ventilated cabinets.
  10. - Electrons on Parade - How Vacuum Tubes were made, worked and used in 1941. Electrons on Parade, a 1941 film on how vacuum tubes were made, worked and were used. Wartime is the hinge: the War Production Board halted manufacture of television and radio equipment for civilian use from 22 April 1942 to 20 August 1945.
  11. - 8D21 vacuum tube, VHF dual tetrode, RCA, introduced 1946 for 5 KW television transmitters - National. 12. - MoMI RCA TV. A ten inch RCA television of 1946 at the Museum of the Moving Image. Ten inches was a large screen in 1946 and the tube behind it dictated a cabinet deeper than it was wide.
  13. - RCA 621TS Television Receiver (1946) with optional blonde cabinet, MoMI. An RCA receiver of 1946 in a blonde wood cabinet, at the Museum of the Moving Image. 1946 is where the American television market really begins, after the War Production Board halted civilian set manufacture between 1942 and 1945.
  14. - RCA 630-TS Television. RCA Model 630-TS television set seen in a museum. Its caption indicates it was the first mass produced TV set and was sold in 1946 and 1947.
  15. - RCA 630TS Television Receiver (1946), MoMI. An RCA receiver of 1946 at the Museum of the Moving Image, with a rectangular mask over a round tube face. Masking a round tube to look rectangular was standard until tubes themselves were made rectangular.
  16. - Motorolagoldenviewchassis. The underside of the chassis of a 1948 Motorola seven inch receiver, showing point to point wiring between valve sockets. Every joint here was made by hand, which is why sets of this period were repairable and why a service trade existed to repair them.
  17. - Bush TV12 vintage tv. A British made Bush television of 1949, this example the Birmingham or Midlands variant rather than the London one. Sets were built to different variants because each transmitter region used a different frequency, so the receiver had to be matched to where it would be sold.
  18. - Emerson1949. An American Emerson receiver of 1949 built around a 7JP4 picture tube. The tube type is the set's defining specification, a seven inch round face with the standard white phosphor of the period.

  47. - B43G2; WF 1964. A monochrome picture tube from the Werk für Fernsehelektronik with 110 degree magnetic deflection and a 400 mm diagonal. Widening the deflection angle to 110 degrees let the tube be shorter for the same screen size, which is what made shallower cabinets possible.
  48. - B43M2; WF 1964. A monochrome picture tube built at the Werk für Fernsehelektronik using 70 degree magnetic deflection and magnetic focusing, with a 390 mm diagonal. A 70 degree tube is noticeably longer than a 110 degree one of the same screen size, so this design demanded a deeper cabinet behind it.
  49. - B47G1; WF 1964. A monochrome picture tube from the Werk für Fernsehelektronik with 110 degree magnetic deflection and a 446 mm diagonal, about 17.5 inches. East German tube production was concentrated at this one Berlin plant, which supplied set makers across the republic.
  50. - B53G1; WF 1964. A monochrome picture tube made at the Werk für Fernsehelektronik with 110 degree magnetic deflection. The tube was the single most expensive component in a television set and the one that fixed the shape of everything built around it.
  51. - B59G1; WF 1964. A rectangular monochrome picture tube from the Werk für Fernsehelektronik with 110 degree deflection, a usable screen of 385 by 489 mm and a 566 mm diagonal, about 22 inches. Rectangular tubes ended the wasted glass of the round envelope and let the screen fill the front of the cabinet.
  52. - EF860, WF 1964. EF860 pentodes from the Werk für Fernsehelektronik, the tube on the right carrying the "Q" quality mark. The Q mark was an East German state quality designation, applied to goods judged to meet export standard.
