- RondôniaThe state of Rondônia in western Brazil, once home to 208,000 square kilometers of forest (about 51.4 million acres), an area slightly smaller than the state of Kansas, has become one of the most deforested parts of the Amazon. In the past three decades, clearing and degradation of the state’s forests have been rapid: 4,200 square kilometers cleared by 1978; 30,000 by 1988; and 53,300 by 1998. By 2003, an estimated 67,764 square kilometers of rainforest, an area larger than the state of West Virginia, had been cleared.
- Bridges DanangA 25-room co-living hotel on a quiet street in Sơn Trà, Da Nang, posting almost daily since July 2020, which means the archive opens in the middle of a lockdown. The beach closes and reopens, flights resume, there is ginger tea for immunity and guided meditation on Monday mornings, and a few guests simply stay: Ben and Lucille for 214 days, Jonas long enough to have a birthday there before leaving for Lithuania. Around them, six years of breakfast on The Deck, the co-working floor called The Pier, rooms with balconies facing the sea, Tết and Christmas and Mid-Autumn, and the city itself, the bridges, Mỹ Khê, the Hàn River. It is the hotel's own camera and its own words throughout, in the order it happened.
- Pink PalaceThe backpacker hostel above Agios Gordios beach on Corfu. Founded by Dr. George around 1985, it grew from a restaurant on the sand into a pink complex on the hillside that Let's Go was sending travellers to by 1990, with the ouzo circle, the plate smashing, the cliff jump and the toga night. Built from the hostel's own archive, its Instagram, and the free photographic record of the Corfiot coast around it.
- NamibiaA country assembled from the oldest desert on earth, the people who have lived along it, and three occupations. Rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, Ovaherero cattle and Ovambo kingdoms, Nama polities and San hunter-gatherer societies. Then German South West Africa, the mission stations, and the war of extermination waged against the Ovaherero and Nama between 1904 and 1908. South African rule from 1915, apartheid extended northward, the contract labour system and the strike that broke it. SWAPO, the liberation war, and independence on 21 March 1990. The diamonds at Kolmanskop and the uranium after them, the fishing fleet, the conservancies, and Windhoek. The archive is built from what is freely licensed, and that record is uneven in a way worth naming: the occupying forces are extensively photographed and the liberation movement is barely present. Where a claim is contested it is attributed to whoever made it.
- IranFive thousand years of Persia, from the Luristan bronzes and the terraces of Persepolis to the war and the protests of 2026. Carpets, miniatures and Sasanian silver; the radif and the Tehran pop of the 1970s; Kiarostami and the New Wave; fire temples, Friday mosques, Armenian churches and synagogues; the Qashqai and Bakhtiari migrations; Nowruz; the kitchens and the bakery ovens; and the three revolutions, in 1906, 1953 and 1979. Most of it was found in Persian, because the English-language record of Iran is not the same country.
