Boyle lobbies to legalise gold-making

Robert Boyle, a founder of the Royal Society, quietly believed in transmutation — and in 1689 successfully petitioned Parliament to repeal the medieval law against "multiplying" gold, so that adepts could practise freely. The boundary between chemistry and alchemy was still unfixed.
