Maria the Jewess — first known alchemist

Maria the Jewess (Maria Hebraea), described by Zosimos, is the earliest alchemist whose name survives. She is credited with inventing key laboratory apparatus — the tribikos still and the kerotakis — and the water-bath that still bears her name (bain-marie).
