Developers on Assomption Island have made it almost impossible to find out what they’re doing - no photos, no transparency, just secrecy. This week, we finally received the first image from Assomption all year. What does it show? 🚨 DREDGING 🚨 is in progress on a key sea turtle nesting beach - an invasive practice that is completely ILLEGAL on the island. Def. dredging: the clearing of a seabed or shoreline by scooping out sand, mud or plants, often with heavy machinery. ‼️ Why are they doing this? ‼️ Likely to alter the shoreline, create new land, deepen lagoons for yacht access, use sand for cement-making or build coastal infrastructure. ‼️ What are they destroying? ‼️ Dredging is one of the most disruptive activities for marine ecosystems, and even small-scale alterations can cause catastrophic and lasting damage: accelerating coastal erosion, destroying seagrass beds, eliminating critical nesting sites for sea turtles and threatening biodiversity and the health of entire marine habitats. To get the Seychelles Marine Spatial Plan signed into law took 15 years and hundreds of meetings with stakeholders - a true, community-driven process built on safeguarding nature and our shared future. After all that hard work, are we really going to let developers break the law so easily? Not only are they disregarding our natural heritage, they are blatantly ignoring Seychelles’ laws. This photo is proof that, away from public eyes, the developers are doing whatever they want and getting away with it. Help us put an end to this before it’s too late.
