Day 8 in our Aldabra Christmas Series. (1/4)
2026
Day 8 in our Aldabra Christmas Series. Today’s animal is the Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus). 🦩 Aldabra is one of two oceanic flamingo nesting sites in the world (the other being the Galápagos). 🌊 They feed in brackish (slightly salty) pools, rich with algae and crustaceans. The ‘carotene’ from their diet is what gives them their pink colour. ⚠️ Flamingos are shy - human presence can make an entire flock take flight. Happy New Year! Stay tuned for a new species tomorrow! 📸 Image credits Slides 1 & 2: Simon Watkins Slides 3 & 4: @evileyelander 🎶 Song by @joe_samy_official / @s_chlochlo
