Friends of Aldabra is opposed to the establishment of any foreign military base on Assomption. ❌ During his 17 February press conference, President Patrick Herminie stated that as part of a new maritime agreement with India, Seychelles would be building a coast guard facility on Assomption that would be managed by the Seychelles Defence Forces. The project would be supported by India. Presented as a coast guard facility, the announcement has revived widespread public concern online, with many Seychellois drawing parallels to the previously proposed Indian military base on Assomption that citizens strongly opposed in 2018. While existing coast guard facilities are already on the island and some maritime security presence may be useful in principle, we remain deeply skeptical without clear details on the true scale and purpose of this new proposal.
