Multiple decisions.

Multiple decisions. Limited clarity. Growing public concern. Following the 17th February announcement by President Herminie that India will support the construction of a coast guard facility on Assomption Island - with construction said to be able to begin “at any time” - Seychellois citizens have been raising questions, sharing their concerns, and discussing the future of the island. There are currently multiple processes unfolding at once: 🛥️ Proposed coast guard facility, 🛎️ Halted hotel construction, ⚖️ Ongoing Commission of Inquiry, 🐢 Commitment to a 1-year biodiversity assessment, and, 📍 The Inter-Sectoral Environmental Task Force. It is currently unclear how these different layers will inform each other. Friends of Aldabra is listening to the concerns being voiced and has begun compiling public questions to share with the government. At the heart of this moment is a simple principle: decisions affecting our outer islands must be guided by transparency, environmental best practice, and meaningful public participation. “Everyone’s eyes are on Assomption because what happens there reflects who we are as a country and the values that we protect.” #ProtectAssomption #ProtectAldabra #Seychelles
